Senior Citizens Savings Scheme Name Correction in Uttarakhand
For retired people and their spouses whose name on a Senior Citizens' Savings Scheme account differs from Aadhaar, PAN or the pension papers: who is named on the account, how the post office or bank corrects it, why the spouse's name matters most, and what the family files after a death.
A Senior Citizens Savings Scheme name correction is made at the post office or bank that holds the account, on a written request with identity papers. Correct Aadhaar or PAN first if one of them is the odd paper. Have the spouse's and the nominee's names checked in the same visit. A spelling needs no Gazette.

This account usually holds the largest sum a retired person has: the retirement benefits of a working life. A Senior Citizens Savings Scheme name correction is a small errand for the holder and a hard one for a widow. This page explains Senior Citizens Savings Scheme name correction for retired people and their families in Uttarakhand.
We do not deal with post offices or banks, and this subject seldom needs a Gazette. Who can hold the account and what happens on a death are from the scheme's notified rules, as published copies reproduce them. How a counter corrects a name is general practice. For other post office accounts, read name change in post office savings.
What Is the Scheme, and Where Is the Account Held?
- What it is. A Government savings scheme for older people, with one deposit that earns interest paid every quarter.
- Who can open it. A person of sixty or more. A person between fifty-five and sixty who has retired can also open one, within a short time of receiving retirement benefits, and retired defence personnel earlier still.
- Where. At a post office, or at a bank authorised for the scheme.
- How it is held. In one person's name, or jointly with the spouse.
- Who you deal with. The post office or branch that holds the account.
The scheme is the Government's, and the rules are the same everywhere. But the record of your name is kept by one counter, and that counter is where it is corrected.
What Do the Scheme's Rules Say?
From the notified rules of the scheme of 2019, as published copies reproduce them, and a bank's published answers on it.
| Point | What the rules say |
|---|---|
| Who holds it | An individual, in individual capacity or jointly with the spouse |
| Whose age counts | In a joint account, the age of the first account holder decides eligibility. There is no age limit for the second |
| Whose deposit it is | The whole deposit in a joint account is attributable to the first account holder only |
| Where interest goes | It is credited to the account holder's savings account |
| On the holder's death | The account is closed and the deposit refunded to the nominee or the legal heirs, on the scheme's closure form |
| The spouse's option | In a joint account, or where the spouse is the sole nominee, the spouse may continue the account if the spouse meets the eligibility conditions on the date of death |
The opening form in the rules asks for the names of the first and second holders, each one's PAN, proof of date of birth, proof of identity and proof of address, and the nominees. Every one of those is a name or a date that some later paper will be held against.
Which Names Does the Account Carry?
| Name | Read against | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| The first holder | Aadhaar, PAN, the proof of date of birth and, for an early retiree, the retirement papers | At opening, at every interest credit, and at closure |
| The spouse, as second holder | The spouse's own Aadhaar and PAN | When the spouse continues or claims the account |
| The nominee | The nominee's own identity papers | At a claim, after the holder or both holders have died |
| The savings account holder | The scheme account itself | Each quarter, when interest is credited |
A retired man's own name is seldom the trouble. He has spent a career having it checked. The spouse's name is the one written from habit, and the one that will be read most strictly, on the day he is no longer there.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
The holder's name
- Initials on the account and a full name on Aadhaar, or the other way
- A spelling that differs from PAN
- Cured at the counter, on identity papers
The spouse's or nominee's name
- A wife written by a home name, or without the surname her Aadhaar carries
- A nominee named from memory
- Cured by a correction and a fresh nomination, while the holder is alive
The papers behind the account
- The proof of date of birth, or the retirement papers, carry another name or date
- Found at opening, and it stops the account being opened
- Cured by correcting that paper first
The first two can wait years unnoticed, since interest keeps arriving. That is the danger. Nothing prompts anyone to look until a claim is made. Read short name and full name difference.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The account has initials or a spelling slip | A written request at the counter, with Aadhaar and PAN | No |
| PAN or Aadhaar is the paper that differs | Correct that paper, then tell the counter | No |
| The spouse is named by a home name or a maiden name | A correction, on the spouse's Aadhaar and the marriage certificate | No |
| The nominee's name is wrong, or there is none | A fresh nomination | No |
| The proofs of date of birth disagree | Correct the wrong paper before opening | No |
| Interest is not being credited | Check the linked savings account's name and status | No |
| The holder has died, and the spouse's papers differ from the account | The claim or continuation, with the paper that links the names | No |
| The holder has changed a name by choice | Gazette, then identity papers and the account | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows. The rest is a visit to a counter the holder already knows.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. The post office or the bank will give you its own form.
Step 1: Open the passbook, or ask for a statement
Read the first holder's name, the spouse's if it is a joint account, and the nominee's.
Step 2: Put Aadhaar and PAN beside it
Yours, and your spouse's.
Step 3: Look at the savings account the interest goes to
Its name should read as the scheme account does.
Step 4: Correct Aadhaar or PAN first, if one of them is the odd one
At an Aadhaar centre, or through the PAN correction request.
Step 5: Give the post office or the bank a written request
With the passbook, identity papers, and the marriage certificate where a surname has changed.
Step 6: Have the linked savings account corrected in the same visit
So that interest is not returned.
Step 7: Check the nomination
Add or correct the nominee, named as on the nominee's Aadhaar.
Step 8: Get the passbook reprinted and read it
Then check the next interest credit.
What About Age, and the Retirement Papers?
- Eligibility turns on age. The opening form asks for proof of the date of birth.
- Older people often have two dates: one on a school or service record, another on Aadhaar, which may carry only a year.
- The counter needs one date. Where the papers disagree, the one that is wrong is corrected before the account is opened.
- A person who opens the account between fifty-five and sixty does so as a retired person, within a short time of receiving retirement benefits, and shows the employer's papers for that.
- Those papers carry the name the employer held. Where it differs from Aadhaar and PAN, the counter will ask.
- A pensioner should check the pension payment order as well. It is the paper most later offices will ask for.
Read date of birth correction and name change in pension and family pension records.
Why Does the Spouse's Name Matter So Much?
- The rules allow a joint account with the spouse only. The second holder is therefore, by definition, a husband or a wife.
- The rules also give the spouse a right no other nominee has: to continue the account after the holder's death, if eligible.
- To use that right she has to show that she is the spouse named, with her own identity papers.
- A wife entered as "Smt. Kamla" or by a home name, with an Aadhaar that reads otherwise, has to explain the difference at the worst possible time.
- Her marriage certificate is the paper that proves she is the spouse. Many couples married fifty years ago have none. A certificate can still be obtained, and it is worth obtaining now.
- Where the spouse is not a joint holder, naming her as the sole nominee gives her the same option under the rules.
Read name correction in marriage registration certificate and name change after marriage.
What About Interest, the Savings Account and PAN?
- The rules have interest credited to the holder's savings account. It does not sit in the scheme account.
- So there are two accounts, and the names on them should be one.
- Where the savings account is at another bank, a different spelling there can send a credit back.
- A bank's published answers say PAN, or the declaration in its place, is mandatory for the account. Tax deducted on interest is recorded against that PAN.
- A declaration given to avoid deduction of tax is made in the holder's name and PAN. A mismatch there shows up in the tax record.
- We do not advise on tax. Ask a tax adviser about deduction, declarations and the benefit claimed on the deposit.
Read name change in bank records, name change in PAN card and name mismatch on the income tax e-filing portal.
What Happens After the Holder's Death?
- Tell the post office or the bank. From the date of death the deposit earns only the savings account rate, under the rules, until the account is settled.
- The spouse's choice. A spouse who is the joint holder or the sole nominee may continue the account, if eligible on that date. Otherwise it is closed.
- A nominee's claim. On the scheme's closure form, with the death certificate and the nominee's identity papers. In a joint account, a bank's published answers say the nominee's claim arises only after both holders have died.
- No nominee. The legal heirs claim. The counter asks for proof of heirship, and for a large sum may ask for a succession certificate.
- The names. The holder's name on the death certificate against the account. The claimant's name on the account or nomination against the claimant's own papers.
Read nominee name mismatch in a bank claim, name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate and succession certificate name mismatch.
What About Transfer and Extension?
- An account can be moved from one post office or bank to another. The record travels as it stands, slips included.
- The new office then re-enters the holder, sometimes by hand. That is where a second slip is added to the first.
- Read the new passbook the day it is given, and check the first interest credit after the move.
- At maturity the rules let the holder extend the account for a further period. The extension continues the same account in the same names.
- Both a transfer and an extension bring the holder to the counter with identity papers. Use the visit to have the names and the nomination put right.
- An old couple who have moved to live with a son in another town should move the account properly, not leave it at a counter they can no longer reach.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Only where the holder has changed a name by choice, and the post office or bank asks for a Gazette before it changes its record. It has no part in a spelling, in initials, or in the name of a holder who has died.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or initials
Those are corrected at the counter on identity papers.
Step 2: Ask the post office or the bank what it needs
Most ask for a Gazette for a change of name by choice.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar, PAN, the pension record and the account.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar and PAN, the savings account and the scheme account.
Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
A post office is a central office and a bank follows Aadhaar and PAN. The Gazette of India is the one to prefer.
Step 1: Ask the post office or the bank which Gazette it accepts
It reads identity papers, and they follow Aadhaar and PAN.
Step 2: Think about the pension record and other deposits
The Gazette of India serves them all.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Account Holders Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Writing the spouse's name from habit | Copy it from the spouse's Aadhaar |
| Opening the account in initials | Use the full name, as on Aadhaar and PAN |
| Never reading the passbook's first page | Read the three names on it |
| No nomination, or one never updated | File or renew it at the counter |
| A linked savings account in another form of the name | Bring both accounts to one name |
| Having no marriage certificate | Obtain one while both are alive |
| Leaving it for the children to sort out | Only the holder can sign the request |
| Paying for a Gazette to fix initials | The counter corrects them on identity papers |
| Not telling the office of a death | Tell it at once. The interest rate changes from that date |
A typical case we handle: a retired schoolteacher in Dehradun held a joint account with his wife. The passbook named her "Smt. Shanti", and her Aadhaar read "Shanti Devi Joshi". After his death the post office would not let her continue the account on those papers, and her son asked us for a Gazette. She did not need one, since her name had never changed. The family obtained her marriage certificate, and with it, her Aadhaar and the family pension order naming her, the post office accepted her as the spouse on the account. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a spelling, initials, a spouse's or nominee's name, and a family's claim. The post office or the bank settles those on identity papers. We are useful only where the holder has changed a name by choice and a Gazette notification is asked for.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The account is corrected at the post office or bank that holds it. For the papers behind it, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one to correct.

Can the spouse continue the account after the holder's death?
Yes, if a joint holder or sole nominee, and eligible.
Who can be a joint holder in the scheme?
The spouse only.
How do I change the nominee?
By a fresh nomination at the counter.
Is a gazette needed to correct the name on the account?
No. Only where the holder has changed a name by choice.
Why was my quarterly interest not credited?
Often the linked savings account's name or status is the cause.
How long does an SCSS account run?
Five years from opening, as banks' published pages give it. The account can then be extended, and the extension keeps the same names, so correct them before you extend.
Can an SCSS account be extended more than once?
A bank's published page says it can be extended any number of times for further blocks of three years, by applying to the branch within a year after maturity. Some older guides say only once, so ask your counter.
On which dates is SCSS interest paid?
On the first working day of April, July, October and January, credited to the holder's savings account. A name that differs on that account can hold the credit.
Can I open more than one SCSS account?
Yes. A bank's published page says more than one account may be opened, within the overall limit, but not more than one in the same office in a calendar month. Keep the name identical on each.
Can an SCSS account be closed early?
Yes, with a deduction that depends on how long it has run. A bank's published page says that if it is closed within a year, the interest already paid is recovered.
Can an SCSS account be moved to another post office or bank?
Yes. A bank's published page says the account can be transferred between authorised banks and post offices. The name moves as it stands, so correct it first.

Names on a Senior Citizens' Scheme Account: The Short Version
The account carries the holder's name, the spouse's if it is joint, and a nominee's. Read all three on the passbook against Aadhaar and PAN, and check that the linked savings account reads the same. The post office or bank corrects a name on a written request with identity papers. The spouse's name matters most, since the rules let a spouse continue the account after the holder's death. Obtain a marriage certificate if there is none.
A spelling needs no Gazette. To find out which record to correct, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
