Ration Card e-KYC Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand: Aadhaar and Each Member

For families in Uttarakhand whose ration card e-KYC will not go through for one or more members: what the check is, why the Aadhaar number matters more than the spelling, who corrects the card and who corrects Aadhaar, and what to do for an elder whose fingerprint fails.

Quick answer

A ration card e-KYC name mismatch is settled by checking, for each member, the Aadhaar number on the card first and the name second. A wrong number or name on the card is corrected by the supply office. A wrong Aadhaar or a failing fingerprint is put right at an Aadhaar centre. No Gazette is needed.

When one member's ration card e-KYC fails, check the Aadhaar number on the card first, the fingerprint next, and the name last.

In 2026 the state asked every family to complete e-KYC for its ration card, member by member. For some, one member would not go through. A ration card e-KYC name mismatch is one of several reasons. This page explains ration card e-KYC name mismatch, and the reasons often mistaken for it.

We do not do e-KYC, and this subject needs no Gazette. That e-KYC is required, and how it can be done, are from news reports of May 2026. We did not read any Government order. For changes to the card itself, read name change in ration card.

What Is the Check, in Brief?

  • What it is. A confirmation that each person listed on a ration card exists, and holds the Aadhaar entered for him or her.
  • How. By fingerprint on the machine at the fair price shop, or by face on a mobile app.
  • Who. Every unit on the card. Each member, separately.
  • Why. To remove entries for people who have died, moved, or are listed twice.
  • What it is not. A change to the card. It confirms what is there.

So e-KYC shows up faults that were always in the card. A member entered years ago with a wrong number or a home name passed unnoticed until the machine asked for a finger.

What Is Reported?

From news reports of May 2026. We did not read the state's order, and dates may have been extended since.

What news reports say about ration card e-KYC in Uttarakhand
PointWhat is reported
RequiredThe state made e-KYC mandatory for all ration cards and for every unit entered on them
The dateReports gave 30 or 31 May 2026
From homeAn app made by the National Informatics Centre, Mera e-KYC, allows it by face recognition, to help the elderly and people with disabilities
Online servicesRation card services, including adding and removing members, corrections and e-KYC verification, have been put online
If not doneReports said trouble in receiving ration could follow
How names are comparedNot stated in any report we found

The last row is the one this site's readers ask about, and we cannot answer it from a source. What follows on names is reasoning from how the check works, and is marked as such.

What Is Matched to What?

What a ration card e-KYC compares and who corrects each
On the ration cardChecked againstCorrected by
The member's Aadhaar numberThe Aadhaar the finger or face belongs toThe supply office
The member's finger or faceThe biometrics held by the identity authorityAn Aadhaar centre
The member's nameThe name on Aadhaar, to an extent we could not confirmThe supply office, or an Aadhaar centre
Age and genderAadhaarThe same

The first two rows decide the check. A person puts a finger on the machine, and it either belongs to the number entered for that member or it does not. That is our reading of how such a check works, not a statement from an order.

Why Does It Fail?

A wrong Aadhaar number on the card

  • A digit mistyped, or two members' numbers swapped
  • The finger is right, the number is someone else's
  • The supply office corrects the card

A finger or face that will not read

  • Worn fingerprints, or biometrics never updated since childhood
  • Nothing wrong with the card at all
  • The face app, or an Aadhaar centre

A name that differs

  • A home name, a maiden name, a spelling
  • It may or may not stop the check
  • Correct it in any case

A member who is not there

  • Working elsewhere, married into another family, or dead
  • The card is out of date
  • Remove or move the member

People tend to blame the name. The number and the fingerprint are worth ruling out first. Ask the dealer what the machine says before deciding.

How Is It Put Right?

This is general guidance. The fifth step saves the most time.

Step 1: Take out the ration card and every member's Aadhaar

Lay them side by side, one member at a time.

Step 2: Check the Aadhaar number entered against each member

One wrong digit, or two members' numbers swapped, will fail the check however right the names are.

Step 3: Check each name against that member's Aadhaar

Note any spelling, a home name, or a missing surname.

Step 4: Try the e-KYC for each member

At the fair price shop by fingerprint, or by face on the app the state has asked people to use.

Step 5: Where it fails, ask the dealer what the machine says

A failed fingerprint, a wrong number and a name problem are three different things.

Step 6: Have the ration card corrected, where the fault is in it

Through the state's online ration card service or the supply office.

Step 7: Have Aadhaar corrected or biometrics updated, where the fault is there

At an Aadhaar centre.

Step 8: Do the e-KYC again, and keep proof that it was done

For every member, the head of the family and all the others.

What About the Aadhaar Number on the Card?

  • Aadhaar numbers were added to ration cards by typing them in, often from photocopies, a family at a time.
  • A digit can go wrong, or one member's number be typed against another.
  • It may go unnoticed while ration is drawn on one member's fingerprint.
  • e-KYC asks each member in turn. A swapped number then fails for two people at once.
  • The cure is on the card, not on Aadhaar. The supply office corrects the number against the member.
  • Take every member's Aadhaar card with you, so that all the numbers are checked in one visit.

Read name change in ration card, on how a correction is asked for.

What About the Name on the Card?

  • Ration cards were written from what the head of the family said. A wife is "Munni", a son is "Pappu".
  • Aadhaar carries the formal name.
  • We could not confirm if a differing name by itself stops the e-KYC.
  • It is worth correcting either way. A ration card is offered as proof of family for other things, and a home name on it helps nobody.
  • Where the ration card is wrong, it is brought to Aadhaar.
  • Where Aadhaar is wrong, Aadhaar is corrected first, on a birth, school or marriage paper, and the card follows.

Read home name and school name different in documents and Kumari, Devi and the husband’s surname.

What About Fingerprints and Faces?

  • Fingerprints wear with age and with work in fields and kitchens.
  • A machine that will not read an old woman's finger is saying nothing about her name.
  • Reports say the state offered an app that checks by face, for those who cannot manage the fingerprint.
  • Where the face fails too, the member's biometrics are updated at an Aadhaar centre, and the check is tried again.
  • A member too ill to travel should be reported to the supply office. Ask what it does in such a case.
  • Do not let anyone take ration on another person's finger. That is the very thing e-KYC is meant to end.

Read a name change for a person who cannot sign, on elders and their papers.

What About Children, and Members Away?

  • A child's Aadhaar is made without fingerprints when very young, and has to be updated with biometrics as the child grows.
  • A child whose Aadhaar was never updated may fail the check for that reason alone.
  • A child with no Aadhaar has to be enrolled first.
  • A son working in another city is still a unit on the card, and still has to be checked.
  • Ask the supply office how a member living away completes it. We could not confirm the arrangement.
  • A member who has left for good should be removed. A card is for the people who eat from that kitchen.

Read Baal Aadhaar child name correction.

What If the Date Has Passed?

  • The date reported was the end of May 2026. This page is written in October.
  • We could not confirm if the date was extended, or what was done with cards and members left unchecked.
  • Reports at the time said trouble in receiving ration could follow.
  • If a member's name has gone from the card, ask for the member to be added again, with Aadhaar.
  • If the whole card is affected, ask the supply office in writing what is needed to restore it.
  • Complete the e-KYC for every remaining member now, whatever the date.

Read what to do when an application is pending and Aadhaar seeding name mismatch, for other benefits that stop without warning.

Where Does a Gazette Come In?

Only where a member's own name has changed by choice. Aadhaar is updated on it, and the ration card follows Aadhaar. It has no part in e-KYC.

Step 1: Confirm that a member's own name has in fact changed

A home name or a spelling on a ration card is corrected by the supply office.

Step 2: Understand what e-KYC checks

A person against an Aadhaar number. A Gazette has no part in that.

Step 3: Fix the exact new name

The spelling that will go on Aadhaar and then the ration card.

Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice

Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update Aadhaar, and then the ration card

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.

Which Gazette Should You Use?

The ration card is the state's, but it follows Aadhaar. The Gazette of India is the one to prefer.

Step 1: Remember that the ration card is the state's

The supply office may accept a state Gazette for its own record.

Step 2: Remember that it follows Aadhaar

And Aadhaar is central.

Step 3: Prefer the Gazette of India

It serves Aadhaar, and through it the ration card.

Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Families Make?

Common mistakes with ration card e-KYC

Blaming the name without asking the dealerAsk what the machine says
Never checking the Aadhaar numbers on the cardCheck each one
Changing Aadhaar to match a home name on the cardBring the card to Aadhaar
Giving up on an elder's fingerprintTry the face app, then a biometric update
Leaving a dead or departed member on the cardHave the name removed
Drawing ration on someone else's fingerNever
Paying a shop to "do the KYC"The dealer and the app do it
Asking for a GazetteNone is needed

A typical case we handle: a family in Almora completed e-KYC for four members, and the daughter-in-law would not go through. The card called her "Guddi". Her Aadhaar read "Geeta Bisht". Her husband wrote to us asking for a Gazette to make her Guddi on Aadhaar. That would have been the wrong way round, and nothing of the kind was needed. The dealer's machine also showed that the Aadhaar number entered for her was her sister-in-law's. The supply office corrected both the number and the name on the card. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

When you do not need us

For anything to do with e-KYC or a ration card. The supply office, the dealer and an Aadhaar centre settle it. We are useful only where a member's own name has changed by choice and a Gazette notification is needed.

Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?

All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. e-KYC is done at your own fair price shop or on the app. If a member's Aadhaar and other papers disagree, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which to correct.

It is reviewed by Advocate Vipin Chauhan.

That e-KYC was made mandatory for all ration cards and every unit, the date at the end of May 2026, the face recognition app made by the National Informatics Centre, and that ration card services including corrections have been put online, are from news reports of May 2026. We did not read the state's order, and could not confirm how names are compared, what was done after the date, or how a member living away completes it. That the check turns on the Aadhaar number and the biometric is our reading of how such a check works, and how numbers came to be entered wrongly is general knowledge. The district supply office is the authority.

Ration Card e-KYC: The Short Version

e-KYC checks each member of a ration card against that member's Aadhaar, by fingerprint or face. When one member fails, look first at the Aadhaar number on the card, then at the fingerprint, and only then at the name. The supply office corrects the card. An Aadhaar centre corrects Aadhaar and updates biometrics. Remove members who have died or left. Do it for every member. No Gazette is needed.
