Atal Pension Yojana Name Correction in Uttarakhand
For subscribers whose own name, spouse's name or nominee's name is written wrongly in the pension account: where the name came from, which form corrects it, why the spouse's name matters most, and what the family needs if the subscriber dies.
An Atal Pension Yojana name correction is made at the bank or post office branch through which you joined, on the scheme's modification form. The branch corrects the savings account on Aadhaar first, then the pension account. Check the spouse's and the nominee's names in the same visit. No Gazette is needed for a spelling.

The scheme is joined in a few minutes at a bank counter and then runs untouched for thirty or forty years. An Atal Pension Yojana name correction is best made while the subscriber is alive and able to sign. This page explains Atal Pension Yojana name correction for subscribers in Uttarakhand, and for the families who will one day claim.
We do not deal with banks or the scheme, and this subject almost never needs a Gazette. What the form allows is from the scheme's modification form, as banks publish it. The papers on a death are from the pension regulator's circular. For the larger pension system, read name change in NPS account.
What Is the Scheme, and Who Holds the Record?
- What it is. A pension scheme of the central Government, meant mainly for workers with no pension from an employer. The subscriber pays a fixed sum from a savings account and is promised a fixed monthly pension from the age of sixty.
- Who regulates it. The pension regulator, through the same record-keeping system that serves the national pension system.
- How a person joins. Through a savings account at a bank or a post office. The contribution is taken from that account automatically.
- The number. Each subscriber gets a permanent pension account number.
- Who you deal with. Your own branch. The scheme's papers call it the service provider.
The record sits in a central system, but a subscriber cannot reach in and change it. Every correction goes in through the branch.
Where Does the Name Come From?
- The savings account. Opened, often years earlier, in whatever form of the name the branch accepted then.
- The registration. A one-page form, or a few taps at the counter or on the bank's app. The branch enters the subscriber from its own record.
- The spouse and the nominee. Named by the subscriber, usually from memory, standing at the counter.
- The central record. The branch sends the details up, and the pension account number is issued.
- The card and the statements. Printed from the central record.
So the subscriber's name is as good as the savings account, and the spouse's name is as good as the subscriber's memory of how her papers spell it. Neither was checked against Aadhaar by anyone with time to spare.
What Does the Modification Form Allow?
From the scheme's form for modification of details and change of service provider, as banks publish it, and the record keeper's procedure note for branches.
| Part of the form | What can be changed | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Personal details | The subscriber's name | The form says initials are not permitted |
| Bank details | The savings account from which the contribution is taken | A second part of the form covers a move to another bank |
| Nominee and spouse | The spouse's name, the nominee's name and relationship | The form says the spouse is the default nominee |
| Date of birth and pension amount | A correction of the date of birth, and a change of the pension chosen | The procedure note treats these as changes with a money effect |
| Where it goes | The form is submitted at the service provider's branch. The pension account number is mandatory | |
| What you can ask for | The form lets you ask the branch for a fresh account card and a statement, free of cost | |
Fill only the parts that need changing. The form carries an acknowledgement slip. Have it stamped and keep it with the passbook.
Which Three Names Should You Check?
The subscriber
- Read against Aadhaar and the savings account
- Decides whose pension it is, and who can sign a request
- Usually wrong because the savings account was
The spouse
- Read against the spouse's own Aadhaar
- Decides who receives the pension after the subscriber
- Usually wrong because it was written from memory
The nominee
- Named where there is no spouse, or after both
- Read against the nominee's own identity papers on the day of a claim
- Often a child who was small then and has school papers in a fuller name now
The record keeper's note lists the subscriber's name, the spouse's name and the nominee's name among the details printed on the account card. Ask the branch for the card or a statement and read all three.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The pension account has a spelling slip, and the savings account is right | The modification form | No |
| The savings account itself is in a short form or with initials | Correct the savings account on Aadhaar, then the form | No |
| Aadhaar is the wrong one | Correct Aadhaar, then the bank, then the form | No |
| The spouse's name is wrong, or a maiden name | The form, in the part for the spouse, on her Aadhaar | No |
| The subscriber married after joining | The form, to add the spouse | No |
| A woman subscriber has taken a married surname | Aadhaar and the savings account on the marriage certificate, then the form | No |
| The subscriber has died, and the names do not agree | The death certificate and the spouse's papers. See the section on a death | No |
| The subscriber has changed a name by choice | Gazette, then Aadhaar, the bank and the form | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows. Everything else is a form at a counter you already use.
How Do You Put It Right?
Step 1: Find your pension account number
It is on the card or statement the branch gave you, or the branch can look it up from your savings account.
Step 2: Ask the branch for a statement of the pension account
Read the names it holds: yours, your spouse's and the nominee's.
Step 3: Put Aadhaar and the savings passbook beside it
The three should read alike.
Step 4: Correct Aadhaar first, if it is the odd one
At an Aadhaar centre.
Step 5: Have the savings account corrected
At the same branch, on Aadhaar. The pension account hangs from it.
Step 6: Fill the scheme's modification form
Only the parts that need changing, with the name in full and no initials.
Step 7: Submit it at the branch and keep the acknowledgement
The form has a tear-off slip. Keep it.
Step 8: Ask for a fresh card or statement and read it
The form lets you ask the branch for one free of cost.
Why Do the Spouse and the Nominee Matter So Much?
- The form says the spouse is the default nominee. After the subscriber, the pension is hers or his.
- A subscriber's own wrong name can be put right by the subscriber, at any time, with a signature. A spouse's wrong name is found when the subscriber is no longer there to sign.
- A wife is often entered as she is called at home, or with the husband's surname, while her Aadhaar still carries her maiden name.
- Enter her as her Aadhaar reads on the day. If she changes her name later, the form is used again.
- A subscriber who joined unmarried should add the spouse after marriage. Many never do.
- A nominee who was a small child at joining should be checked against the child's present school and identity papers.
Read nominee name mismatch in a bank claim and name change after marriage.
What About the Date of Birth?
- The contribution under the scheme depends on the age at joining and the pension chosen. So the date of birth is a money entry as well as an identity entry.
- The record keeper's note calls a change of the date of birth a financial modification. It is handled with more care than a spelling.
- A date that makes the subscriber younger or older than the scheme's entry ages at joining raises a question the branch has to refer.
- Correct the date on Aadhaar and in the savings account first, on the best proof you hold, and then ask the branch what the correction means for your contributions.
- Do not let a wrong date run on. The pension begins at sixty by the date in the record.
We could not confirm how a difference in past contributions is settled. Ask the branch. Read date of birth correction.
What About the Savings Account Behind It?
- The pension account hangs from a savings account. The contribution leaves that account, and the pension will one day arrive in one.
- Where the savings account's name differs from Aadhaar, correct the savings account first. The branch does this on Aadhaar, like any customer's record.
- Many subscribers joined through a post office or a rural or cooperative bank. The route is the same: the branch that holds the account.
- A subscriber who has moved the savings account to another bank uses the part of the form for a change of bank details and of the service provider.
- A savings account that has gone dormant, or has no balance on the debit day, stops the contributions. That is not a name problem, and it costs more than one.
Read name change in bank records and name change in post office savings.
What Does the Family Need If the Subscriber Dies?
From the pension regulator's circular on simplifying the process in death cases, and the closure form attached to it.
- The form. The spouse, or the nominee where there is no spouse, applies to the branch on the scheme's closure form for a death case.
- The death certificate. A copy, verified by the bank branch or the post office.
- Identity. The spouse's or the nominee's own identity papers.
- The bank account. Proof of the spouse's or the nominee's bank details.
- The choice. The circular says the account can be maintained in the spouse's name for the remaining period, and that where the subscriber dies before sixty the amount is settled in the spouse's name as default nominee.
Three names have to agree at this point: the subscriber on the pension account and on the death certificate, and the spouse in the pension account and on her own papers. Where they do not, the death certificate is corrected by the Registrar, and the marriage certificate links a wife's two names. Read name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate and name correction in marriage registration certificate.
What Happens at Sixty?
- The pension is to begin when the subscriber reaches sixty, by the date of birth in the record.
- It is paid into a bank account. That account's name has to match the pension account's.
- An old person's papers drift. A bank asks for fresh identity papers over the years, Aadhaar is updated, and the pension account is forgotten.
- So look at the pension account again a year or two before sixty, with Aadhaar and the passbook beside it.
- We could not confirm the scheme's current procedure at sixty. Ask the branch well ahead.
A subscriber who also draws the state's old-age pension has two separate records. Read name change in old-age and widow pension records.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Almost never for this scheme. It comes in where a subscriber has changed a name by choice, and Aadhaar and the bank ask for a Gazette. The pension account then follows the savings account.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling
A spelling is corrected at the branch on Aadhaar.
Step 2: Keep paying while you wait
A Gazette commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks. The contributions should not stop for it.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar, the savings account and the pension account.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file, then update Aadhaar, the savings account and the pension account
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
Does the Uttarakhand Gazette Matter Here?
Not to the scheme, which follows the bank. The question is only which Gazette the bank and Aadhaar accept.
Step 1: Ask the bank which Gazette it accepts
The pension account follows the savings account.
Step 2: Think about Aadhaar and PAN
The Gazette of India serves them all, including your PAN.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Subscribers Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Never looking at the account after joining | Ask for a statement and read the three names |
| Writing the spouse's name from memory | Copy it from the spouse's Aadhaar |
| Not adding a spouse after marriage | Use the form to add the spouse |
| Asking for the pension account to be corrected before the savings account | The savings account first |
| Using initials on the form | The form does not permit them |
| Leaving a wrong date of birth | Correct it, and ask what follows |
| Paying for a Gazette to fix a spelling | The branch corrects it on Aadhaar |
| Leaving it for the family to sort out | Only the subscriber can sign the form |
| Losing the acknowledgement slip | Keep it with the passbook |
A typical case we handle: a tailor in Haldwani had paid into the scheme for eight years. His wife was entered as "Guddi Devi", the name he calls her. Her Aadhaar read "Sunita Arya". Their son, reading the statement, rang us to ask if his mother needed a Gazette. She did not, since her name had never been Guddi on any paper. His father filled the modification form at the branch with her Aadhaar, and asked for a fresh card. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

A Name in the Pension Account: The Short Version
The pension account takes its names from the savings account and from what the subscriber said at the counter. Ask the branch for a statement and read three names: yours, your spouse's and the nominee's. Correct Aadhaar and the savings account first, then fill the modification form at the branch, in full names. The spouse's name matters most, because she will claim when the subscriber cannot sign.
A spelling needs no Gazette. To find out which record to correct, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
