Gold Loan Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
For people who have pledged jewellery with a bank or a finance company, where the name on the loan or the pledge receipt differs from Aadhaar or PAN: which names a gold loan carries, how the lender corrects its record, and what the family needs to recover ornaments after a borrower's death.
A gold loan name mismatch is corrected at the lender's branch, on a written request with identity papers. Correct Aadhaar or PAN first if one of them is the odd paper. Do it before you repay, since the ornaments are handed back to the person named on the receipt. A spelling needs no Gazette.

A gold loan is taken in a hurry, for a wedding, a hospital bill or a sowing season, and the papers are signed without a second look. A gold loan name mismatch matters most on the day the family comes to take its jewellery back. This page explains gold loan name mismatch for borrowers in Uttarakhand.
We do not deal with lenders, and this subject seldom needs a Gazette. The rules on ownership, release and auction are from the central bank's directions of June 2025, as published summaries set them out. How a lender corrects a name is general practice. For unsecured borrowing, read personal loan and credit card name mismatch.
What Is a Gold Loan, and Who Lends?
- What it is. A loan against gold ornaments or coins, which the lender keeps until the loan is repaid.
- Who lends. Banks, including rural and cooperative banks, and finance companies that specialise in it.
- What the borrower gets. The money, and a pledge receipt or card describing the ornaments.
- What the borrower gives. Identity papers, a declaration that the ornaments are the borrower's own, and the ornaments.
- How it ends. The loan is repaid and the ornaments are handed back, or it is not repaid and they are auctioned after notice.
The whole arrangement rests on one identification: the person who comes back is the person who pledged. The lender has only the name on its papers to tell.
What Do the Central Bank's Directions Say?
From published summaries of the central bank's directions on lending against gold and silver, issued in June 2025, with lenders given until April 2026 to comply. We did not read the directions on the central bank's own site.
| Point | What the directions provide |
|---|---|
| Ownership | The lender obtains a declaration that the borrower is the rightful owner, and does not lend where ownership is doubtful |
| Identity and payment | Loans follow the lender's identity checks, and are disbursed to the borrower's own bank account |
| Release | On full repayment the pledged ornaments are returned the same day, or within seven working days at most |
| Delay | Where the delay is the lender's, it pays compensation for each day beyond that time, to the borrower or the legal heirs |
| Auction | After an auction the borrower is told the details, and any surplus is refunded within seven working days |
| Unclaimed ornaments | Lenders make periodic efforts to locate borrowers or their legal heirs |
Each of these rows names a person: the owner, the borrower, the heirs. The directions protect that person. They can do so only when the lender's record and the person's own papers agree on who that is.
Which Names Does a Gold Loan Carry?
| Paper | Name on it | Read against |
|---|---|---|
| The lender's customer record | The borrower, from identity papers given at opening | Aadhaar and PAN |
| The pledge receipt or card | The borrower | The identity paper shown on the day of release |
| The ownership declaration | The borrower, as owner of the ornaments | Any later claim that the ornaments were someone else's |
| The bank account for disbursal | The account holder | The borrower's name on the loan |
| The nominee, where recorded | The nominee | The nominee's own papers, after a death |
A finance company's counter makes these in minutes, and the clerk types the name from whichever card is handed over. A person who gave a voter card ten years ago and carries a corrected Aadhaar today is, to that record, two people.
What Kinds of Problem Are There?
The same borrower, written differently
- A spelling, initials or a dropped surname in the lender's record
- Or the identity paper has changed since the loan
- Cured at the branch, on identity papers
A name that changed
- A woman pledged before marriage, and her Aadhaar now carries a married surname
- Or the borrower has changed a name by choice
- Cured by the marriage certificate, or a Gazette, with updated identity papers
A different person at the counter
- The borrower has died, is abroad, or is too ill to come
- Or the ornaments were pledged in one family member's name and belong to another
- Not a correction. Proof of heirship, or a written authority, as the lender requires
The third kind is where families lose time. A lender will not hand a dead man's ornaments to his son because the son has the receipt and the same surname.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The lender's record has a spelling slip | A written request at the branch, with Aadhaar and PAN | No |
| The loan is in initials or a short form | The same | No |
| Aadhaar or PAN is the paper that is wrong | Correct it, then tell the branch | No |
| A woman's surname changed after the pledge | The branch, on the marriage certificate and updated identity papers | No |
| The pledge receipt is lost | An indemnity and identity papers. Not a name problem | No |
| The borrower cannot come in person | A written authority in the lender's form | No |
| The borrower has died | The heirs or nominee, with the death certificate and proof of heirship | No |
| The borrower has changed a name by choice | Gazette, then identity papers and the lender's record | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows. For the rest the lender's own branch is the place.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Each lender has its own form.
Step 1: Find the pledge receipt and the loan papers
Read the borrower's name on each, and the loan account number.
Step 2: Put Aadhaar and PAN beside them
Mark any difference, letter by letter.
Step 3: Decide which is the odd one
The lender's record, or one of your identity papers.
Step 4: Correct the identity paper first, if it is the one that is wrong
Aadhaar at an Aadhaar centre, PAN through its correction request.
Step 5: Give the branch a written request to update its record
With the corrected identity papers, and the marriage certificate where a surname has changed.
Step 6: Ask for the correction to be noted on the loan account
And for a fresh receipt or an endorsement, as the lender does it.
Step 7: Check the nominee, where the lender records one
Named as on the nominee's Aadhaar.
Step 8: Do this before you go to close the loan
The day you repay is the day the ornaments are handed over, on your identity.
What Happens When You Take the Ornaments Back?
- Repayment. The loan and interest are paid in full, and the account is closed.
- Identification. The lender asks for the pledge receipt and an identity paper, and compares the name and the face with its record.
- The handover. The ornaments are checked against the description on the receipt and handed to the borrower, who signs for them.
- Time. The central bank's directions say the same day, or within seven working days at most.
- A mismatch. The lender holds the ornaments until it is satisfied. A delay caused by the borrower's papers is not the lender's to compensate.
That last point is the reason to correct the record beforehand. The directions give a borrower a remedy for the lender's delay, not for a delay that comes from the borrower's own identity papers. Read name change in Aadhaar card and name change in PAN card.
Whose Gold Is It?
- In most homes the jewellery is the wife's, given at her wedding, and the loan is taken by the husband, who deals with the bank.
- The directions require the borrower to declare that the ornaments are the borrower's own, and bar lending where ownership is doubtful.
- So the person who owns the ornaments should be the borrower. A wife can pledge in her own name, with her own identity papers and account.
- Where a husband has pledged his wife's jewellery in his name and then died or left, she has to prove a claim against a record that does not name her.
- A mother-in-law's ornaments pledged by a son, or a sister's by a brother, raise the same question.
- A purchase bill is rarely available for old jewellery. That is why the declaration, and the name on it, carry so much weight.
This is advice about names, not about who owns what in a family. Where ownership is disputed, see a lawyer. Read name change after marriage.
What If the Borrower Has Died?
- Tell the lender, in writing, with the death certificate. Interest continues to run until the loan is repaid.
- Who can claim. A nominee, where the lender recorded one. Otherwise the legal heirs, together.
- What the lender asks for. The death certificate, proof of who the heirs are, each heir's identity papers and the others' consent where one is to receive.
- For valuable ornaments. A lender may ask for a succession certificate from a court, or for sureties and an indemnity.
- The names. The dead borrower's name on the death certificate against the lender's record, and each heir's name against the heir's own papers.
- Unclaimed ornaments. The directions tell lenders to make efforts to find borrowers or heirs. A family that suspects a late relative pledged gold can ask the lenders in the town.
Read name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate, succession certificate name mismatch and nominee name mismatch in a bank claim.
What About Notices, Auction and Surplus?
- Before it auctions, a lender sends notice to the borrower at the name, address and mobile number on its record.
- A borrower who has moved, changed a number or changed a name without telling the lender may never see it.
- After an auction, the directions have the lender tell the borrower the details and refund any surplus within seven working days.
- The surplus is paid to the borrower's account. A name that does not match holds it.
- Where the borrower has died, the surplus is the heirs', on the same proof as for the ornaments.
Keep the lender's record current for as long as the gold is with it: the name, the address and the mobile number. Read name change in bank records.
What About the Credit Record?
- A gold loan from a bank or a finance company is reported to the credit bureaus, against the borrower's name, date of birth and PAN.
- A loan reported in one form of the name and a later loan in another can sit in two files, or be joined to a stranger's.
- A closed loan should show as closed. Where it does not, the lender corrects what it reported.
- A borrower applying for a home or business loan later will be read against this record.
Read name mismatch in a CIBIL credit report, home loan name mismatch and Kisan Credit Card name mismatch.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Only where the borrower has changed a name by choice, and the lender asks for a Gazette before it changes its record. It has no part in a spelling, a married surname or a dead borrower's name.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or a married surname
A lender corrects those on identity papers and a marriage certificate.
Step 2: Do not let the loan run on while you wait
A Gazette commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks. Interest does not wait. Ask the lender what it will accept meanwhile.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar, PAN, the bank account and the lender's record.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar and PAN, the bank account and the lender's record.
Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
Lenders follow Aadhaar and PAN, which are central records. The Gazette of India is the one to prefer.
Step 1: Ask the lender which Gazette it accepts
It follows Aadhaar and PAN.
Step 2: Think about the bank and the credit record
The Gazette of India serves them all.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Borrowers Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Not reading the pledge receipt | Read the name on it at the counter |
| Pledging a wife's jewellery in the husband's name | The owner should be the borrower |
| Giving one identity card to the lender and carrying another later | Tell the branch when an identity paper changes |
| Finding the mismatch on the day of repayment | Correct the record beforehand |
| Sending a son to collect on the father's receipt | The borrower in person, or a proper authority |
| Not telling the lender of a death | Tell it in writing. Interest is running |
| Letting the address and mobile number go stale | Keep them current, for notices |
| Paying for a Gazette to fix a spelling | The branch corrects it on identity papers |
| Paying a middleman to "release" the gold | Nobody can. The lender acts on papers |
A typical case we handle: a woman in Kashipur had pledged her bangles before her marriage, as "Rekha Rani". When she came to repay three years later, her Aadhaar read "Rekha Saxena", and the finance company would not hand over the ornaments. Her husband asked us for a Gazette. She did not need one. She had taken his surname on marriage, and the marriage certificate showed both names. The branch updated its record on the certificate and her Aadhaar, and released the bangles. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
What is a lawyer's job, not ours
A dispute within a family over whose ornaments they were, a lender's refusal to release, a wrongful auction and a claim for compensation.
When you do not need us
For a spelling, a married surname, a lost receipt and an heir's claim. The lender settles those on identity papers and certificates. We are useful only where the borrower has changed a name by choice and a Gazette notification is asked for.

The record is corrected at the lender's own branch. For the papers behind it, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one to correct.

Names on a Gold Loan: The Short Version
A lender hands pledged ornaments back to the person named on its record and the pledge receipt. Read that name against Aadhaar and PAN now, and have the branch correct its record before you go to repay. The owner of the ornaments should be the borrower. Keep the lender's record of your address and mobile number current. After a borrower's death, the heirs or a nominee claim with the death certificate and proof of who they are.
