Cooperative Society Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand: Membership and Loans
For farmers and villagers whose name in a cooperative society's register does not match Aadhaar, the land record or the cooperative bank's account: where a member's name is written, who corrects it, why a crop loan stops on it, and what happens to a share when a member dies.
A cooperative society name mismatch is corrected by the society itself, on the member's application with Aadhaar and the land record. Put right whichever of the three is wrong, and then the society's register, the loan papers and the cooperative bank account. A spelling needs no Gazette. Do it before the sowing season.

The village cooperative is the oldest office many farming families deal with. It sells seed and fertiliser, gives the crop loan, and in some places buys the milk. Its register was written by hand, a generation ago, by a secretary who knew everyone. A cooperative society name mismatch is that register meeting a computer. This page explains cooperative society name mismatch for members in Uttarakhand.
We do not deal with cooperative societies, and this subject seldom needs a Gazette. That the state has its own cooperative law, and what the parent law says about a member's share on death, are from the published Acts. The rest is general guidance. For a bank's own farm loan, read Kisan Credit Card and crop insurance name mismatch.
What Are the Societies, and What Do They Do?
- The village credit society. A members' society for one or a few villages. It gives short crop loans, and sells seed and fertiliser.
- The cooperative bank. The district's bank for these societies. A member's loan and payments pass through an account there.
- Milk and other producers' societies. They collect what members produce, and pay them for it.
- The member. A person admitted by the society, who holds a share and is entered in its register.
- The secretary. The paid official who keeps the register and the ledgers.
A cooperative is a business owned by its members. It is not a Government office and not a charity, though the state supervises it. That matters for who corrects what.
What Does the Law Say?
From the published text of the Uttarakhand Co-operative Societies Act, 2003, which was adapted from the Uttar Pradesh Act of 1965, and from that parent Act's provision on a member's death. Check the state Act for the present wording.
| Point | What the Acts say |
|---|---|
| The state's law | The Uttarakhand Co-operative Societies Act, 2003, extending to the whole state |
| A primary society | A cooperative society of which no member is itself a registered society |
| Supervision | By a Registrar of cooperative societies appointed under the Act |
| On a member's death | The parent Act says the society shall transfer the share or interest to the person nominated, or if none, to the person who appears to the committee to be the heir or legal representative |
| A condition | No such transfer unless the nominee, heir or legal representative is admitted as a member |
| The society's dues | The society keeps its right to realise its claims against the deceased member from the share or money due |
Nothing here speaks of spelling. What it does show is how much rests on two names in the register: the member's own, and the nominee's.
Where Is a Member's Name Written?
| Record | Kept by | How it is corrected |
|---|---|---|
| The members' register | The society | On the member's application, by the committee |
| The share entry or certificate | The society | Follows the register |
| The loan ledger and the card | The society, and the cooperative bank | Follows the register and the bank account |
| The land record | The tehsil | At the tehsil |
| The cooperative bank account | The bank | At the branch, on Aadhaar |
| Aadhaar | The identity authority | An Aadhaar centre |
| The nomination | The society | A fresh nomination by the member |
Three of these are the anchors: the register, the land record and Aadhaar. A loan needs all three to name one person. The others follow once they do.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
The register is the odd one
- A home name, a spelling or a missing surname, written by hand long ago
- Aadhaar and the land record agree with each other
- The society corrects its register
The land record is the odd one
- The land is in a father's name, or in an old spelling
- The society cannot lend on land that is not shown as yours
- The tehsil first, then the society
The member is not the person farming
- The membership is still in a dead father's or husband's name
- The son or widow has carried on, informally
- Not a correction. A transfer on death, and a new membership
The third is common and is nobody's spelling mistake. A family has gone on dealing with the society in a dead man's name, and the computer will no longer let it.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The register has a spelling slip | An application to the society, with Aadhaar | No |
| The register has a home name | The same, with Aadhaar and the land record | Sometimes |
| The land record differs from the register | The tehsil, then the society | No |
| Aadhaar is the paper that is wrong | Correct Aadhaar first | No |
| A woman member's entry is in her maiden name | The marriage certificate, to the society and the bank | No |
| The member has died | Transfer to the nominee or heir, who is admitted as a member | No |
| The nominee's name does not match her papers | A fresh nomination by the member | No |
| The member has changed a name by choice | Gazette, then Aadhaar, the land record, the society and the bank | Yes |
A Gazette appears plainly once in eight rows. The society, the tehsil and the bank settle the rest.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Each society follows its own bye-laws.
Step 1: Ask the society's secretary to show your entry in the members' register
Your name, your father's or husband's name, the village and the share held.
Step 2: Put it beside Aadhaar and the land record
A loan from the society rests on all three agreeing.
Step 3: Find which of the three is the odd one
A register written by hand years ago is usually it. Sometimes it is the land record.
Step 4: Correct your own papers first, where they are wrong
Aadhaar at its centre. The land record at the tehsil.
Step 5: Apply to the society for the register to be corrected
In writing, with Aadhaar and a copy of the land record. The committee records it.
Step 6: See that the share and the loan papers follow
The share entry, the loan ledger and any card issued in your name.
Step 7: Carry the correction to the cooperative bank
The account your loan and payments pass through, on Aadhaar.
Step 8: Make or renew your nomination
In the name the nominee's own Aadhaar carries.
What About the Members' Register and the Share?
- A person is a member because the register says so. It records the name, the father's or husband's name, the village and the share held.
- Older entries were made on the member's word, with no paper asked for.
- Societies are being computerised, and members' entries are being matched with identity numbers. That is when a hand-written name is first tested.
- The correction is the society's to make. Apply in writing to the secretary, with Aadhaar and a copy of the land record.
- The committee notes it, and the share entry and ledgers follow.
- Ask for a copy of the corrected entry, signed and stamped. The cooperative bank will want to see it.
Where a secretary says it cannot be done, ask for that in writing. The department's officer for cooperatives in the district is the next step. Read what to do when a name correction is pending.
What About the Crop Loan and the Land Record?
- A crop loan from the society is sized on the land the member holds and the crop grown on it.
- So the society reads the land record, and the name on it has to be the member's.
- Land still in a father's or grandfather's name does not support a loan to the son, however long he has tilled it.
- Land held jointly by brothers supports a loan to each only for his share, and each has to be a member.
- A spelling that differs between the land record and the register is corrected at whichever is wrong. The tehsil corrects the land record.
- State schemes that lend through societies on easy terms use the same papers. The terms change, so ask the society for the present ones.
Read name correction in khatauni and land records, Kisan Credit Card and crop insurance name mismatch and PM-KISAN name mismatch.
What About the Cooperative Bank Account?
- A member's loan is drawn, and repaid, through an account at the cooperative bank's branch.
- That account was often opened on the society's word, in the name the register had.
- The bank now holds its customers to the same identity rules as any other bank.
- An account whose name differs from Aadhaar is flagged for fresh KYC, and may be restricted until it is done.
- Correct it at the branch, on Aadhaar, with the society's corrected entry.
- Any subsidy or relief on a loan is credited to that account. A name that differs holds it.
Read name change in bank records and Jan Dhan account name mismatch, on old accounts asked for fresh papers.
What Happens When a Member Dies?
- The parent cooperative law says the society transfers the dead member's share or interest to the person he nominated.
- Where nobody was nominated, it goes to the person who appears to the committee to be the heir or legal representative.
- In either case that person has to be admitted as a member before the transfer.
- The society keeps its right to recover what the member owed it from the share and from money due to him.
- So the family brings the death certificate, the nominee's or heir's identity papers and, where there was no nomination, proof of who the heirs are.
- Three names are then read together: the member's in the register, his on the death certificate, and the nominee's on her own papers.
Do not go on taking fertiliser or a loan in a dead member's name. Read nominee name mismatch in a bank claim and name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate.
What About Milk and Other Producers' Societies?
- A milk society records each member who pours milk, and pays by the quantity and quality.
- Payment now goes to a bank account, on a list the society sends.
- The member is very often a woman, entered years ago by a home name, with the account in her husband's name or her own.
- A name on the list that differs from the account can make a credit fail, or go into suspense.
- The society corrects its list on her Aadhaar. The account should be her own, in the same name.
- Other producers' and marketing societies work the same way: a member's entry, and an account to pay.
A registered charitable society or a self help group is a different kind of body. Read office bearer name mismatch in societies and trusts and self help group and NRLM records name mismatch.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Only where the member has changed a name by choice, and Aadhaar, the tehsil and the society ask for a Gazette. It has no part in a spelling, a married surname or a dead member's share.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or a married surname
Those are settled by the society and the bank on ordinary papers.
Step 2: Weigh the time against the season
A Gazette commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks. A crop loan is wanted before sowing.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar, the land record and the register.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar, the land record, the society and the bank.
Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
Cooperatives and the tehsil are under the state, and may accept a state Gazette. Aadhaar, which they now check against, is the reason to prefer the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Remember that cooperatives are under the state
The society, the cooperative bank and the tehsil may accept a state Gazette.
Step 2: Remember that Aadhaar is central
It follows the Gazette of India.
Step 3: Prefer the Gazette of India
It serves both.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Members Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Never having seen your own entry in the register | Ask the secretary to show it |
| Dealing in a dead father's membership | Transfer it, and become a member |
| Asking for a loan on land not in your name | The mutation first |
| Finding the mismatch at sowing time | Check in the slack season |
| Correcting the register and not the bank account | Both, in the same month |
| No nomination, or one in a home name | Nominate in the nominee's Aadhaar name |
| Accepting "it cannot be changed" by word of mouth | Ask for it in writing |
| Paying for a Gazette to fix a register's spelling | The society corrects it |
| A milk payment account in someone else's name | The member's own account |
A typical case we handle: a farmer near Roorkee was told his crop loan could not be renewed. The society's register, written in his father's time, had him as "Pappu, son of Ram Singh". His Aadhaar and his land record read "Pradeep Kumar Saini". The society's new system would not link the two. A relative told him to get a Gazette. He applied to the secretary with Aadhaar and the land record, and the committee corrected the register. The cooperative bank then updated his account, and the loan was renewed. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

That the state has the Uttarakhand Co-operative Societies Act, 2003, adapted from the Uttar Pradesh Act of 1965, with a Registrar and a definition of a primary society, is from the Act's text on the High Court's site. That a dead member's share goes to the nominee or, failing that, to the heir, who has to be admitted as a member, and that the society keeps its claims, is from the parent Uttar Pradesh Act. We did not confirm the matching section of the state Act, its rules on nomination, or any state lending scheme. How a society corrects its register, what a crop loan rests on, the cooperative bank's checks and milk payments are general guidance. Your society's bye-laws and the department's officer for cooperatives are the authority.

Names in a Cooperative Society: The Short Version
A member's name sits in the society's register, on the land record and on Aadhaar, and a loan needs all three to agree. Ask to see your entry. Correct whichever is wrong: Aadhaar at its centre, the land record at the tehsil, the register by the society on your application. Then the cooperative bank account. Make a nomination in the nominee's Aadhaar name. A dead member's share is transferred, not carried on.
A spelling needs no Gazette. To find out which paper to correct, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
