Jan Dhan Account Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
For holders of a Jan Dhan savings account whose pension, subsidy or other payment is held because the account's name differs from Aadhaar or from a scheme's record: how the name got there, who corrects it, and what a small account, a re-verification and an unused account each need.
A Jan Dhan account name mismatch is corrected at the branch that holds the account, on a written request with Aadhaar. Correct Aadhaar first if it is the paper that is wrong. Then ask the branch to link the account for benefit payments. No Gazette is needed for a spelling or a home name.

Millions of these accounts were opened in a hurry, at camps and by travelling agents, for people who had never held a bank account. A Jan Dhan account name mismatch is the trace that haste left behind. This page explains Jan Dhan account name mismatch for account holders in Uttarakhand, most of whom receive a pension or a subsidy through it.
We do not deal with banks, and this subject almost never needs a Gazette. How an account is opened, the small account and the card are from the scheme's published answers, as banks reproduce them. How a bank corrects a name is general practice. For savings accounts in general, read name change in bank records.
What Is the Account, and What Makes It Different?
From the scheme's published answers, as banks reproduce them.
- What it is. A basic savings account opened under the national mission for financial inclusion, with no minimum balance.
- Where it is opened. At any bank branch, or with a business correspondent, known as a bank mitra.
- What comes with it. A debit card with accident insurance cover, and an overdraft for eligible holders.
- What it is used for. Mostly to receive payments from the Government: pensions, subsidies, wages and relief.
- What it is in law. An ordinary savings account at an ordinary bank. The bank's rules on identity apply to it like any other.
That last point is the useful one. There is no special office for these accounts. A wrong name is corrected the way any customer's is, at the branch.
How Did the Name Get There?
- Many accounts were opened in the scheme's first months, at camps in villages, hundreds in a day.
- The form was filled by a bank mitra or a helper, from what the person said or from whichever paper was in hand.
- A person with no paper at all could open a small account on a photograph and a thumb impression. The name was then simply what was spoken.
- Women were often entered as they are called at home, or as somebody's wife. Old people were entered with the spelling the helper chose.
- Aadhaar, where it existed, was sometimes itself new and wrong.
- Later accounts opened by Aadhaar verification at the counter carry the Aadhaar name exactly. Those seldom have this problem.
So the older the account and the more hurried its opening, the likelier the mismatch. Nobody did anything wrong. The name was just never read against anything.
In Which Three Places Can a Name Differ?
The account against Aadhaar
- A home name, a dropped surname or a spelling in the bank's record
- Found at a re-verification, or when a card or a loan is asked for
- Cured at the branch, on Aadhaar
The account against a scheme's record
- The pension or subsidy office holds the beneficiary in another form of the name
- The payment is sent and returned, or never sent
- Cured by bringing both to Aadhaar
Aadhaar itself
- The account and older papers agree, and Aadhaar is the one that is wrong
- Every new check now fails against it
- Cured at an Aadhaar centre, and nothing at the bank needs to change
Do not change the bank's record to match a wrong Aadhaar. Find the odd one out first. Read name change in Aadhaar card.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The account has a spelling slip | A written request at the branch, with Aadhaar | No |
| The account is in a home name or a short form | The same | No |
| A woman's account is in her maiden name, and Aadhaar in her married one | The request, with the marriage certificate | No |
| Aadhaar is the paper that is wrong | Correct Aadhaar. Leave the account | No |
| The account is a small account, never completed | Give identity papers and have it made regular | No |
| The payment went to another account | Ask which account is mapped. Not a name problem | No |
| The account is inoperative | Revive it at the branch on fresh papers. Not a name problem | No |
| The holder has changed a name by choice | Gazette, then Aadhaar, then the account | Yes, for Aadhaar |
Two rows are not about a name at all, though the complaint at the counter sounds the same: "my money has not come".
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Your branch will tell you its own form.
Step 1: Find the passbook, or ask the branch for the account's details
The name the bank holds is on the first page.
Step 2: Put Aadhaar beside it
Compare the name, the father's or husband's name and the date of birth.
Step 3: Correct Aadhaar first, if it is the odd one
At an Aadhaar centre, with the mobile number linked.
Step 4: Go to the home branch that holds the account
A change of name in the bank's record is the branch's work.
Step 5: Give a written request with fresh identity papers
Aadhaar, a photograph, and the marriage certificate where a surname has changed.
Step 6: Ask for the account to be linked with Aadhaar for benefit payments
And ask which of your accounts is the one mapped now.
Step 7: Get a fresh passbook print and, if needed, a new card
Read the name on both.
Step 8: Tell the scheme office the account is now in order
So that a held payment is sent again.
For the wording of the request, read name change request letter to the bank manager.
What Can the Bank Mitra Do, and What Needs the Branch?
| Work | Bank mitra | Branch |
|---|---|---|
| Opening an account | Yes, on Aadhaar verification | Yes |
| Deposits and withdrawals | Yes, on a fingerprint or the card | Yes |
| Correcting the name on the account | Ask. Usually no | Yes |
| Reviving an unused account | Ask the branch | Yes |
| A claim after a death | No | Yes |
In a hill village the bank mitra is the bank, and the branch is a bus ride away. For a name, the ride is worth it. Ask the mitra which branch holds the account, and carry the passbook.
What Is a Small Account?
- The scheme's published answers say a person with none of the officially valid documents can open a small account, on a self-attested photograph and a signature or thumb impression before a bank officer.
- Such an account has limits on its balance and on what can go in and out.
- It is valid for twelve months, and for twelve more where the holder shows that an officially valid document has been applied for.
- The answers say it is made a regular account when the holder gives the required identity papers.
- A small account that was never completed is where many of the oddest names sit, since no paper stood behind the name.
- Completing it is the moment to set the name right. The name on the papers you now give becomes the account's name.
A holder who cannot remember what kind of account it was should simply ask the branch.
Why Is the Bank Asking for Papers Again?
- Banks have to re-verify their customers from time to time. For these accounts the turn comes after many years.
- Newspapers reported in 2025 that banks held camps in villages to re-verify accounts opened in the scheme's first year.
- At a re-verification the holder gives current identity papers. The bank compares them with what it holds.
- Where Aadhaar has changed since the account was opened, or was never given, the two names meet for the first time.
- An account that is not re-verified can be restricted. Do not ignore the message or the mitra's reminder.
- Give the paper that explains a difference along with the new one: a marriage certificate for a new surname, or older papers for a home name.
A re-verification is the cheapest correction there is. The branch is already asking for your papers. Give the right ones and ask for the name to follow.
Which Account Gets a Benefit Payment?
- Most Government payments are sent by Aadhaar. They go to the one account mapped to that Aadhaar for benefit payments.
- A person with two accounts, an old Jan Dhan account and a newer one, may find the money in the one not expected. Ask the branch which is mapped.
- The scheme that pays holds its own record of the beneficiary. Where that record's name and Aadhaar differ, the payment may never be sent.
- Where the account's name and Aadhaar differ, a payment that is sent can be returned.
- So three records have to agree: the scheme's, Aadhaar and the bank's. Aadhaar is the one the other two are read against.

What About the Card and Its Insurance?
- The scheme's published answers say the account comes with a debit card that carries accident insurance cover, subject to conditions on the card's use.
- The card is printed in the name on the account. A corrected account needs a fresh card.
- A claim under the cover is made by the nominee or the family, through the bank, after an accident.
- At that point the names on the account, the nomination, the death certificate and the claimant's own papers are all read together.
- Many holders never named a nominee, or named one from memory. Ask the branch who is recorded, and correct it.
We left out the amount of the cover and its conditions, since they have changed over the years. Ask the branch. Read nominee name mismatch in a bank claim.
What About an Unused Account, or a Holder Who Has Died?
An unused account
- An account with no transactions for a long time becomes inoperative
- Payments sent to it can be returned
- The branch revives it on fresh identity papers
- That is the moment to correct the name as well
A holder who has died
- The nominee claims the balance at the branch
- Where there is no nominee, the heirs claim, on the papers the bank lists
- The death certificate should name the holder as the account does
- Payments credited after the death may be taken back
A widow who draws her own pension should have her own account, in her own Aadhaar name. Her late husband's account is not hers to use. Read name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Almost never for this account. It comes in where the holder has changed a name by choice and Aadhaar needs a Gazette for that. The bank then follows Aadhaar.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or a home name
Those are corrected at the branch on Aadhaar.
Step 2: Count the cost
The Government charge is a large sum against a small account. Be sure a Gazette is what you need.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar and the account.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file, then update Aadhaar and the account
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
Does the Uttarakhand Gazette Matter Here?
Not to the bank, which follows Aadhaar. The question is only which Gazette Aadhaar accepts.
Step 1: Ask the Aadhaar centre and the branch which Gazette they accept
The account follows Aadhaar.
Step 2: Think about PAN and other schemes
The Gazette of India serves them all.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Account Holders Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Opening a second account to get round a wrong name | Correct the first. Two accounts confuse the mapping |
| Changing the account to match a wrong Aadhaar | Correct Aadhaar |
| Expecting the bank mitra to correct the name | Go to the branch |
| Ignoring a re-verification message | Give the papers, and have the name follow |
| Leaving a small account uncompleted | Give identity papers and make it regular |
| Not knowing which account is mapped for benefits | Ask the branch |
| Using a late husband's account | Open your own, and claim his balance properly |
| Paying for a Gazette to fix a home name | The branch corrects it on Aadhaar |
| Paying a tout to "release" a payment | Nobody can. The records have to agree |
A typical case we handle: an old woman in a village of Chamoli stopped receiving her pension. Her account, opened at a camp in 2014 on a thumb impression, was in the name "Bachuli Devi". Her Aadhaar, made later, read "Basanti Devi". A relative in Dehradun asked us about a Gazette. None was needed, since Basanti was the name on her ration card and voter card all along. Her grandson took her to the branch with those papers, the account was brought to the Aadhaar name and linked, and the pension office sent the payment again. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For this account, almost always. The branch and the Aadhaar centre do everything. We are useful only where the holder has changed a name by choice and Aadhaar needs a Gazette first.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The account is corrected at its own branch. For the papers behind it, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one to correct.
People Also Ask About a Name on a Jan Dhan Account
How do I correct my name in a Jan Dhan account?
At the branch that holds it, on a written request with Aadhaar.
Why has my pension not come into my Jan Dhan account?
Often the names differ, the account is unused, or another account is mapped.
Can a bank mitra change the name on my account?
Usually not. A change of name is the branch's work.
Is a gazette needed to change the name on a Jan Dhan account?
No. Only where the holder has changed a name by choice.
What is a small account under Jan Dhan?
An account opened without identity papers, with limits, for a limited time.
How is a dead person's Jan Dhan balance claimed?
By the nominee or the heirs, at the branch.
How much accident cover does the Jan Dhan RuPay card give?
The Government's 2025 note says Rs 2 lakh, or Rs 1 lakh for accounts opened before 28 August 2018. The claim is paid in the name on the account, so correct it while you can.
What must be done for the card's accident cover to apply?
A guide to a 2024 parliamentary answer says the holder must have made at least one successful transaction with the RuPay card in the 90 days before the accident, including that day.
How much overdraft can a Jan Dhan holder get?
Up to Rs 10,000 for eligible holders, the Government's 2025 note says. A bank lends only on a verified account, so a name that does not match Aadhaar can hold it up.
Is re-KYC for a Jan Dhan account free?
Yes. Reports of the 2025 campaign say re-verification of KYC for Jan Dhan and other bank accounts is free of cost. Nobody should charge you to update your papers.
Why is my Jan Dhan account due for re-KYC now?
The RBI said in 2025 that many accounts had completed ten years and were due. Accounts opened in 2014 or 2015 are most affected. Correct the name at the same visit.
What happens if Jan Dhan re-KYC is not done?
Reports say it may lead to restrictions on transactions in the account. Visit the branch or a camp with your current papers to keep it active.

A Name on a Jan Dhan Account: The Short Version
A Jan Dhan account is an ordinary savings account, and its name is corrected at the branch that holds it, on Aadhaar. Find the odd paper first: if Aadhaar is wrong, correct Aadhaar and leave the bank alone. Complete a small account, answer a re-verification, and ask which account is mapped for benefit payments. Check the nominee while you are there.
