Yoga Teacher Certificate Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
For yoga teachers and students whose certificate carries a name that differs from Aadhaar or the passport: the three kinds of yoga paper, who corrects each, what teaching abroad asks for, and why a name given by a teacher is a different thing from a name on record.
A yoga teacher certificate name mismatch is corrected by whoever issued the certificate: the certifying body for a board certificate, the university for a degree, the school for its own. Send the original and proof of the right name. For work abroad, every certificate should read as the passport does. A spelling needs no Gazette.

Rishikesh trains yoga teachers from many countries, and universities here award degrees in the subject. A teacher may hold three or four certificates from different bodies, taken over ten years. A yoga teacher certificate name mismatch is one of them carrying a name the passport or Aadhaar does not. This page explains yoga teacher certificate name mismatch for teachers and students in Uttarakhand.
We do not correct certificates, and this subject seldom needs a Gazette. The national board, its levels and the life of its certificates are from the Yoga Certification Board's own published papers. What private schools and foreign registries do is general knowledge. For a name taken on initiation, read name change after sanyas or diksha.
What Are the Three Kinds of Yoga Paper?
| Kind | Issued by | Corrected by |
|---|---|---|
| A national board certificate | The Yoga Certification Board, through a certifying body that assesses the candidate | That certifying body, under the board's procedure |
| A degree or diploma in yoga | A university | The university, under its own rules |
| A teacher training certificate | A private school or ashram | The school that issued it |
These are three different things, though all are called a yoga certificate. The first is the Government's own assessment. The second is an academic award. The third is a private school's word, which some private registries abroad then record. Each has a different door to knock on.
What Has the Board Published?
From the Yoga Certification Board's own guidelines and notices, on its site.
| Point | What the board says |
|---|---|
| The board | Set up by the Ministry of Ayush in March 2018, for certifying yoga professionals and accrediting institutions |
| Nature | A voluntary certification programme |
| Levels | Yoga Protocol Instructor, Yoga Wellness Instructor, Yoga Teacher and Evaluator, and Yoga Master, with separate certifications in yoga therapy |
| Who assesses | Institutions the board accredits as personnel certification bodies conduct its assessment |
| Validity | Five years for a Yoga Protocol Instructor, and three years for the other levels |
| Renewal and duplicates | Renewal through a continuing education programme. The guidelines also provide for a duplicate certificate |
| Public lists | The board publishes notices listing certificate holders by name and certificate number |
The last row matters for names. A board certificate is more than a paper in a drawer. The holder's name stands on a public list that an employer can read. Some entries on those lists show two-part names joined into one word.
Where Is a Teacher's Name Written?
| Record | Name comes from | Read against |
|---|---|---|
| The application for certification | What the candidate typed | The identity paper given with it |
| The certificate | The application | Aadhaar in India. The passport abroad |
| The board's published list | The certificate record | The certificate |
| A school's certificate | The school's register of students | The passport, for most uses |
| A private registry's profile | What the teacher typed, and the school's confirmation | The school's certificate |
| A degree or diploma | The university's enrolment record | The class 10 certificate |
In every row the name began with a form the teacher filled, often quickly and often in a short form. The form is where to take care. Afterwards, the issuer is where to go.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
A slip or a short form
- A missing surname, a joined name, a wrong letter
- Copied from the application
- Reissued by the issuer, on an identity paper
A given or spiritual name
- The certificate carries the name used in the ashram
- The passport carries the civil name
- A fresh certificate in the civil name, or a change of name on record
The identity papers disagree with each other
- Aadhaar in one form, the passport in another
- The certificate matches one and not the other
- Settle the identity papers first, then the certificate
The second is particular to this trade. A teacher known to students for years as "Yogi Anand" may hold a certificate in that name and a passport that says "Anand Prakash Semwal". No consulate will join the two without a paper.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| A board certificate has a spelling slip | The certifying body, on an identity paper | No |
| A board certificate lacks the surname | The same | No |
| The published list shows the name wrongly | The certifying body, to correct the entry | No |
| A school's certificate has a short or given name | The school reissues it in the passport's name | No |
| A university degree differs from Aadhaar | The university, under its rules | No |
| Aadhaar and the passport differ from each other | Aadhaar or the passport first | Sometimes |
| A woman teacher has taken a married surname | The marriage certificate, to each issuer | No |
| The teacher wants a new name on every record | A change of name, then each issuer | Yes |
A Gazette appears plainly once in eight rows. The issuers settle the rest.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Each issuer has its own form and fee.
Step 1: Sort your yoga papers into three heaps
A certificate from the national board, a university degree or diploma, and a school's training certificate.
Step 2: Decide where you will use them
A job in India is read against Aadhaar. Work abroad is read against the passport.
Step 3: Read your name on each paper against that identity paper
Letter by letter, with the spaces.
Step 4: Correct the identity paper first, where it is the odd one
Aadhaar at its centre. The passport by a re-issue.
Step 5: Ask each issuer to correct its own certificate
The certifying body for a board certificate. The university for a degree. The school for its own.
Step 6: Send the original, and proof of the right name
An issuer reissues against the original and an identity paper.
Step 7: Check any public list or registry
The board publishes certified names. A private registry shows a profile. Each should now read the same.
Step 8: Fill every later form from the same identity paper
A renewal, a higher level, a new course.
What About a Board Certificate?
- A candidate enrols with the board and applies for assessment through one of its certifying bodies.
- The name on the certificate is the name on that application. Many candidates type it as they sign, not as their identity paper reads.
- The correction is asked of the certifying body, with the original certificate and the identity paper.
- The board's guidelines provide for a duplicate certificate. Ask the certifying body what it issues for a correction.
- A certificate has a fixed life: five years at the first level and three at the others. Use the renewal to check the name again.
- After a correction, look at the board's published lists, and see that the entry has followed.
We could not confirm the certifying bodies' present forms or fees for a correction. Each body's own site has them.
What About a School's Training Certificate?
- Most teacher training in Rishikesh is by private schools and ashrams, which issue their own certificates.
- A school writes the name its register has, which is what the student gave on arrival.
- Schools that expect students to register abroad usually ask for the name as on the passport. Many students give a short one all the same.
- The school can reissue its certificate. Ask in writing, with a copy of the passport, and return the old one.
- A private registry abroad shows a teacher's profile on the school's confirmation. A corrected certificate may need the profile corrected as well.
- A school that has closed cannot reissue anything. Keep the original safe, and ask early.
A private certificate is not a Government paper, and no Government office corrects it. Its worth abroad rests on the school's standing and on the name matching the passport.
What About Teaching Abroad?
- A teacher going abroad shows certificates to an employer, and often to a consulate for a work visa.
- Both read them against the passport, and against nothing else.
- A passport has two name boxes, surname and given name. A certificate should carry the same words, in an order that plainly matches.
- Some countries ask for certificates to be attested before they are accepted. Attestation fixes a paper as it is. Correct the name before, not after.
- A title such as Yogi, Acharya or Swami is not part of a passport's name. Leave it off certificates meant for abroad.
- Where Aadhaar and the passport differ, bring Aadhaar to the passport before applying for anything further.
Read visa application name mismatch, name change in passport and overseas job and emigration name mismatch.
What About Foreign Students in Rishikesh?
- Many who train here are citizens of other countries, and take the certificate home.
- It will be read there against their passport, by a studio, an insurer or a registry.
- So the school should write the name as the passport's first page prints it, in the same order.
- A name in another script is written in the passport's own Roman spelling, not as it sounds.
- A spiritual name given during the course can be noted apart. It should not replace the passport name on the certificate.
- A foreign national's own change of name follows the law of his or her country. An Indian Gazette is not the paper for it.
Check the certificate before you leave Rishikesh. A correction by post, from another continent, takes months.
What About a Name Given by a Teacher?
- It is common in this tradition for a teacher to give a student a name.
- The student may teach under it for a lifetime, and be known by nothing else.
- On record nothing has changed. Aadhaar, the passport and the bank keep the civil name.
- A certificate in the given name cannot be matched to those by any office.
- So keep the two apart: the given name on a class notice or a website, the civil name on certificates and contracts.
- A teacher who wants the given name on record changes it like anyone else, by a Gazette notification.
Read name change after sanyas or diksha and home name and school name different in documents.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Only where the teacher has decided to change the name on record, for instance to a name long used in teaching. It has no part in a spelling, a short form or a married surname.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or a spiritual name
A spelling is corrected by the issuer. A name given by a teacher changes no record.
Step 2: Decide if you want the new name on your identity papers
Many teachers use a given name in class and keep the civil name on paper.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar, the passport and every certificate after.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar, the passport, and each issuer of a certificate.
Which Gazette Should You Use?
Most teachers who change a name do so with work abroad in mind. The passport is the paper that matters, and the Gazette of India is the one to use.
Step 1: Think about where you will teach
A studio abroad, a consulate and a foreign registry read the passport.
Step 2: Prefer the Gazette of India
It is the one a passport office recognises.
Step 3: A state notice serves state offices
Ask before relying on it elsewhere.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Teachers Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Giving a short or given name on a course form | Copy from the passport or Aadhaar |
| Adding a title to the name on a certificate | Leave titles off |
| Having a certificate attested before correcting it | Correct first |
| Asking the board to correct a school's certificate | The school corrects its own |
| Leaving Rishikesh without reading the certificate | Read it before you travel |
| Aadhaar and the passport in two forms | Settle those first |
| Not checking the published list after a correction | See that the entry followed |
| Letting a certificate lapse during a correction | Renew alongside |
| Paying for a Gazette to fix a certificate's spelling | The issuer corrects it |
A typical case we handle: a teacher in Tapovan was offered work at a studio abroad. His school's certificate, taken eight years earlier, read "Yogi Deepak". His passport read "Deepak Singh Negi", and his Aadhaar "Deepak Negi". The employer's lawyer asked for papers in one name. He asked us for a Gazette to "add Yogi". We told him a title is not a name, and that he needed none. The school reissued his certificate as on the passport, and he had Aadhaar brought to the same form. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a spelling, a short form, a title and a married surname on a certificate. The issuer settles those. We are useful only where a teacher has decided to change the name on record and a Gazette notification is needed.

That the Yoga Certification Board was set up by the Ministry of Ayush in March 2018, that its certification is voluntary, its levels, assessment through personnel certification bodies, the validity of five and three years, renewal, the provision for a duplicate certificate and its published lists of certificate holders, are from the board's own guidelines and notices on its site. That the state's tourism registration lists yoga and meditation centres is from a scheme directory. We could not confirm how a certifying body corrects a name, or its form and fee. What private schools, foreign registries, employers and consulates do is general knowledge, and we name no school or registry. Each issuer is the authority for its own certificate.

Names on Yoga Certificates: The Short Version
A yoga teacher may hold a national board certificate, a university award and a private school's certificate. Each is corrected by its own issuer, on the original and an identity paper. For work in India the name follows Aadhaar. For work abroad it follows the passport. Leave titles off. A name given by a teacher is for the classroom, unless you change it on record. Check every certificate the day it is issued.
A spelling needs no Gazette. To find out which paper to correct, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
