FASTag KYC Name Mismatch With Vehicle RC in Uttarakhand
When a toll tag's verification fails because the owner's name on the registration certificate does not match the identity papers given to the issuer: which check has failed, which paper to correct, and what to do with a tag on a vehicle you bought, sold or inherited.
A FASTag KYC name mismatch is cured by correcting the paper that differs, then submitting the check again with the tag's issuer. The registration certificate is corrected at the transport office, and Aadhaar or PAN at their own offices. A tag on a vehicle you bought needs a transfer of ownership. No Gazette is needed for a spelling.

A toll tag is a small prepaid account tied to one vehicle, and its issuer has to know both the customer and the vehicle. A FASTag KYC name mismatch is usually an old abbreviation on a registration certificate meeting a full name on Aadhaar. This page explains FASTag KYC name mismatch for vehicle owners in Uttarakhand.
We do not deal with tag issuers or transport offices, and this subject almost never needs a Gazette. The two checks are as the highways company's published answers, the payments body's guidelines and the highways authority's notice describe them. Each issuer has its own screens, which we did not test. For the registration certificate itself, read vehicle RC name correction.
What Is the Tag, and Who Issues It?
- What it is. A sticker on the windscreen, read at a toll plaza, linked to a prepaid account from which the toll is taken.
- Who issues it. A bank or another approved issuer. The highways authority's own company also offers a tag that is not tied to one bank.
- Who runs the system. The highways authority's company, with the national payments body that runs the toll collection network.
- One vehicle, one tag. The highways company's published answers say only one active tag is permitted for one vehicle.
- Who you deal with. The issuer of your tag. The highways helpline is the next step.
The tag belongs to the vehicle as much as to the person. That is why a change in either one, a new owner or a corrected name, has to be told to the issuer.
What Are the Two Checks?
| Point | The customer check | The vehicle check |
|---|---|---|
| What it asks | Who is the person or firm behind this prepaid account? | Is this tag on the vehicle it was issued for? |
| Papers | The registration certificate, and identity papers according to the kind of owner | The registration certificate, and a photograph of the vehicle showing the number plate and the tag |
| Where a name is read | The identity papers against each other, and against the registration certificate | The registration certificate against the national vehicle register |
| Who does it | The issuer. The payments body's guidelines put the duty of validating the details on the issuer | |
| Recent change | None we could confirm | The highways authority said in October 2025 that only a front photograph would be needed for a car, and that vehicle details would be fetched from the national register |
The same notice said that services would not be discontinued for vehicles that had not complied, and that users would be given time. Take that as breathing space, not as leave to ignore a failed check.
Where Do the Names Come From?
- The registration certificate. The owner's name as the dealer typed it on the day of purchase, often shortened to fit.
- The national vehicle register. The transport office's record, from which the certificate is printed.
- The identity papers. Aadhaar and PAN, in whatever form each office recorded.
- The tag account. Opened by the issuer, at a counter, a toll plaza or online, on those papers.
- The linked bank account, where the tag is recharged from one.
A vehicle bought fifteen years ago has "Rakesh Kr Sharma" on its certificate. Its owner's Aadhaar says "Rakesh Kumar Sharma". For fifteen years no office compared the two. The tag's issuer now does.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
The same owner, written two ways
- An abbreviation, a missing surname or a spelling on the registration certificate
- Or the identity papers are the ones that are wrong
- A correction, at the office whose paper is wrong
A different person
- The vehicle was bought used and never transferred
- Or it stands in a father's, a husband's or a late owner's name
- Not a correction. A transfer of ownership, or a tag on the owner's own papers
Not a name problem at all
- A blurred upload, a wrong vehicle class, or a second tag on the same vehicle
- The message says the check failed, and the owner assumes it is the name
- Read the reason the issuer gives
The second kind is the one that cannot be argued with. A tag issuer will not accept Aadhaar in one person's name for a vehicle registered in another's, however close the family.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The registration certificate has a short form or initials | A correction at the transport office, on Aadhaar | No |
| The registration certificate has a spelling slip | The same | No |
| Aadhaar or PAN is the paper that differs | Correct that paper, then resubmit | No |
| A woman owner has taken a married surname | Her identity papers on the marriage certificate, then the registration certificate | No |
| The vehicle was bought used, and is still in the seller's name | A transfer of ownership, then a new tag | No |
| The vehicle is in a family member's name | A tag on the owner's own papers. Ask the issuer | No |
| The owner has died | A transfer to the heir, then a new tag | No |
| The owner has changed a name by choice | Gazette, then identity papers, the registration certificate and the tag | Yes |
A Gazette answers one row in eight. In the rest, the transport office or an identity office does the work.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Each issuer's app and portal differ.
Step 1: Find out which check has failed
The customer check or the vehicle check. The issuer's app, its helpline or the message you received will say.
Step 2: Read the reason given
A name, a blurred upload, a wrong vehicle class or a second tag on the same vehicle.
Step 3: Put the registration certificate, Aadhaar and PAN side by side
Write the owner's name from each, letter by letter.
Step 4: Decide which paper is the odd one
The paper that differs from the other two is the one to correct.
Step 5: Correct that paper at its own office
The registration certificate at the transport office, Aadhaar at an Aadhaar centre, PAN through its correction request.
Step 6: Check that the transport record shows the correction
The issuer may fetch the vehicle's details from the national register, so the register has to be right, not just the card.
Step 7: Submit the check again with the issuer
On its app or portal, at a branch, or with its agent. Upload clear copies.
Step 8: Keep the reference number and follow up
With the issuer first, then the highways helpline.
How Is the Registration Certificate Corrected?
- The registration certificate is kept by the transport office where the vehicle is registered. Only that office corrects it.
- A correction of the owner's name is asked for on the office's form, with identity papers that show the right name. The office may ask for an affidavit that both forms are one person.
- Where the vehicle is under a loan, the lender's name is on the certificate too, and the lender may have to be told.
- The insurance policy and the pollution certificate copy the registration certificate. Have them follow.
- The driving licence is a separate record at the same department. It is not corrected by correcting the vehicle's.
- After the correction, ask if the national register shows it. The highways authority has said vehicle details would be fetched from that register.
We could not confirm the transport office's current form or fee for a correction. Read name change in driving licence.
What About a Vehicle You Bought or Sold?
You bought it
- The tag on the windscreen was issued on the seller's papers
- Have the ownership transferred at the transport office first
- Then take a tag in your own name, on the new registration certificate
- Ask the seller to close the old tag, since only one can be active on a vehicle
You sold it
- The tag is your prepaid account. It does not go with the car
- Close it with the issuer, or remove it, at the handover
- A tag left on goes on paying the buyer's tolls from your money
- See that the buyer transfers the ownership, for many reasons beyond the tag
A buyer who drives for years on a seller's registration and a seller's tag has no name problem to correct. He has an ownership to transfer. Until he does, challans, insurance and any accident claim also run in the seller's name. Read motor accident claim compensation name mismatch.
What About a Family Member's Vehicle?
- In many homes the car is in the father's name and the son drives it, pays for it and bought the tag on his own phone.
- The checks are built around the registered owner. The identity papers asked for are the owner's.
- The simplest course is a tag taken on the owner's own papers, with the driver's mobile number added for messages if the issuer allows.
- We could not confirm each issuer's rule on a tag held by someone other than the registered owner. Ask the issuer before assuming.
- A wife whose car is registered in her maiden name and whose Aadhaar is in her married name is one person with two names. Her marriage certificate links them, and one paper is then brought to the other.
Read name change after marriage and name change in Aadhaar card.
What About Vehicles of a Firm?
- A taxi, a truck or a tempo is often registered in a firm's name, or in a proprietor's name with the trade name beside it.
- The highways company's answers say the identity papers depend on the kind of owner. A firm gives its own papers, with those of the person who signs for it.
- The firm's name on the registration certificate should read as it does on PAN and the tax registration.
- A proprietor who is also the registered owner should use one form of the name on every paper.
- A fleet has many tags. Each is tied to one vehicle, and each vehicle's certificate is read separately.
Read name change in Udyam and GST registration and name change in PAN card.
What Happens When the Owner Has Died?
- The vehicle. It is transferred to the heir at the transport office, on the death certificate and proof of succession.
- The old tag. It was the late owner's account. Tell the issuer, and have it closed.
- The balance. Ask the issuer how a balance is paid out to an heir. We could not confirm the practice.
- The new tag. Taken by the heir, on the new registration certificate and the heir's own identity papers.
- The names. The late owner's name on the death certificate should match the registration certificate, or the transfer itself is held up.
A family that goes on driving a late father's car on his tag is using a dead man's account. It works at the toll plaza until the day a check is asked for. Read name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Almost never for a tag. It comes in where the owner has changed a name by choice, so that the identity papers and the registration certificate have to be changed, not corrected. The tag follows them.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or a sale
A spelling is corrected at the office concerned. A sale needs a transfer of ownership.
Step 2: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar, PAN, the registration certificate and the licence.
Step 3: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 4: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar and PAN, the registration certificate and the licence, and last the tag.
Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
The transport office is a state office and may accept it. Aadhaar, PAN and the tag's issuer are the reasons to prefer the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Ask the transport office which Gazette it accepts
The registration certificate is a state office's record.
Step 2: Think about Aadhaar, PAN and the bank
The Gazette of India serves them all.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Vehicle Owners Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Assuming every failed check is about the name | Read the reason the issuer gives |
| Uploading the same papers again and again | Correct the paper that differs first |
| Asking the issuer to change the name on the registration certificate | Only the transport office can |
| Keeping the seller's tag on a used car | Transfer the ownership and take your own |
| Leaving your tag on a car you sold | Close it at the handover |
| Buying a second tag to get round a failed check | Only one tag is permitted on a vehicle |
| Giving a son's Aadhaar for a father's car | The registered owner's papers |
| Paying for a Gazette to fix an abbreviation | The transport office corrects it on Aadhaar |
| Paying an agent to "clear" the check | The issuer does it free on right papers |
A typical case we handle: a schoolteacher in Rudrapur had his tag's check rejected twice. His car's registration certificate, issued in 2011, read "Rakesh Kr Sharma". His Aadhaar and PAN read "Rakesh Kumar Sharma". A man at the toll plaza told him a Gazette would settle it. It was not needed, since his name had never changed. The transport office corrected the certificate on his Aadhaar, the register showed the full name, and the issuer passed the check on the next upload. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a tag, almost always. The transport office corrects the registration certificate, and the issuer does the rest. We are useful only where an owner has changed a name by choice, and a Gazette notification is needed before the identity papers and the registration certificate can follow.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The registration certificate is corrected at the transport office where the vehicle is registered. For the papers behind it, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one to correct.
People Also Ask About a Name in FASTag Verification
Why is my FASTag KYC rejected?
Often the owner's name on the registration certificate differs from the identity papers.
Should the FASTag be in the vehicle owner's name?
The checks are built around the registered owner. Ask your issuer.
Can I use the previous owner's FASTag?
No. Transfer the ownership and take a tag in your own name.
How do I correct my name on the vehicle RC?
At the transport office where the vehicle is registered, on identity papers.
Is a gazette needed for a FASTag name mismatch?
No. Only where the owner has changed a name by choice.
Can a vehicle have two FASTags?
No. Only one active tag is permitted for one vehicle.
What is the FASTag annual pass?
A Rs 3,000 pass from 15 August 2025 for non-commercial private cars, jeeps and vans. It covers up to 200 trips on national highways, or one year from activation, whichever comes first.
Can the FASTag annual pass be transferred to another car?
No. It is non-transferable and works only on the vehicle to which the registered tag is fixed. A tag still in a seller's name is a poor base for a pass.
Can a taxi get the FASTag annual pass?
No. Guides say it is only for non-commercial private vehicles, and buses, trucks and taxis cannot apply for it. A taxi pays toll in the normal way.
Where do I buy the FASTag annual pass?
Guides say it is sold through the Rajmarg Yatra app and the websites of the highways authority and the road transport ministry. Your tag's checks should be complete first.
Does a round trip count as one trip on the annual pass?
No. The ministry said a round trip, there and back, counts as two trips. A single toll plaza crossing is one trip.
Can I buy the annual pass again before the year ends?
Yes. The ministry said users may buy the pass again once the 200 trips are used up, even if the one-year validity has not ended.

That one vehicle may have one active tag, and the papers an issuer asks for, are from the highways company's published answers. That the issuer has to validate the details is from the payments body's guidelines of 2024. The simpler vehicle check, the fetching of details from the national register and the assurance about services are from the highways authority's notice of October 2025. We did not test any issuer's app, and could not confirm the transport office's form or fee, an issuer's rule on a tag held by a family member, or how a late owner's balance is paid. Which paper to correct is general guidance. Your issuer and your transport office are the authority.

A Name in Tag Verification: The Short Version
A tag's issuer checks the customer and the vehicle, and both checks read the registration certificate. Find out which check failed and why. Where the same owner is written two ways, correct the paper that differs: the registration certificate at the transport office, Aadhaar or PAN at their own offices. Then submit again. Where the vehicle is in another person's name, it is an ownership matter, and the tag should be on the owner's papers.
A spelling needs no Gazette. To find out which paper to correct, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
