NIOS Certificate Name Correction for Uttarakhand Students
A wrong name in your open school admission record, mark sheet or certificate: the online route, the three year limit, the fee, and what happens to papers already issued.
An NIOS certificate name correction is applied for online, through the institute's e-services, with supporting documents and a small fee. The institute considers a correction before the first examination, or within 3 years of registration, and accepts none after that. Corrected papers are issued only after the wrong originals are handed back.

An NIOS certificate name correction has a firm clock on it, which catches out learners who notice a mistake only when the mark sheet arrives. This page explains NIOS certificate name correction for open school learners in Uttarakhand: the online route, the time limit, the fee and what to do once the limit has passed.
We do not correct open school records. The institute does, through its own portal. Our work is the Gazette, which has a part where a name has been changed, or where the time for correction is over. For other boards, read name change in education documents in Uttarakhand.
What Is the Institute, and What Does It Issue?
The National Institute of Open Schooling is a national board that lets a learner study and take the secondary and senior secondary examinations outside a regular school. Its certificates stand beside those of other boards for further study and for jobs.
- A learner is admitted online and is given an enrolment number and an online identity card.
- The learner is attached to a study centre and to a regional centre. The institute has a regional centre for Uttarakhand.
- After the examinations, it issues a mark sheet, a provisional certificate, a migration certificate and the pass certificate.
- For a learner who takes the secondary course here, the open school certificate is the class 10 certificate, the anchor for every later paper.
That last point is why a name in this record deserves care. Whatever is printed on it will be copied into the class 12 form, the college admission and every job application.
Where Does the Name on the Certificate Come From?
From the admission form, which the learner fills online. There is no school in between to check it.
- The institute says admission is confirmed by issuing an online identity card with the learner's name, date of birth and subjects, and that these details are the same as the learner filled in at admission.
- It asks the learner to check the details at once: on the website in the learners' corner, on the email confirming admission, and on the online identity card.
- The mark sheet and the certificate are printed from that record.
So the usual causes of a wrong name are a typing slip at home, a form filled by a cyber cafe or an agent, and a name typed from Aadhaar where the earlier school papers read differently.
What Is the Institute's Rule on Corrections?
The institute has published a procedure for correction in the admission records. These points are from it.
| Point | What the procedure says |
|---|---|
| How to apply | Through e-services only |
| When a correction is considered | Before appearing in the first examination, or within 3 years from the date of registration for admission, on uploading supporting documents |
| After that | No request for correction is accepted after 3 years from the date of registration |
| The best time | Before the admit card is issued, so that the pass documents come with the correct details |
| Fee | Charged online, in addition to the fee for a revised document |
| Papers already issued | Revised documents are issued only after the original documents with the incorrect details are submitted, with the fee |
| Which rules apply | The correction rules in force when the request is made |
Read the second and third rows together. A correction is easiest before the first examination, is still possible within three years of registration, and is closed after that. Count the three years from the date you registered, which is on your identity card.
What Is the Difference Between a Correction and a Change, and What Is the Fee?
The institute's list of e-services has separate rows for a correction and for a change.
| Row in the list | What it covers | Fee shown |
|---|---|---|
| Correction in the learner's, father's, mother's or guardian's name after admission | A slip in what was typed, measured against your papers | Rs 100 |
| Correction in the date of birth of the learner | A slip in the date | Rs 100 |
| Change in the learner's, mother's, father's or guardian's name | A different name from the one your papers showed at admission | A separate, higher fee. Guides report Rs 200 |
| Change in the date of birth, as per rule | Only as the institute's rule allows | A separate fee |
The learner also pays the fee for the revised document. Fees change, so read the amount on the portal before you pay.
The practical difference is the proof. A correction is supported by a paper that shows the name as it should have been typed. A change is supported by the paper that records the change, such as a Gazette notification. Choose the row that is true for you. A change filed as a correction is likely to be sent back.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| A typing slip, noticed before the first examination | A correction through e-services, at once | No |
| A typing slip, noticed after the result, within 3 years of registration | A correction through e-services, then hand back the wrong originals | No |
| A parent's name is wrong | The same correction row, with the parent's identity proof | No |
| You have changed your name since admission | The change row, with the paper that records the change | Yes, as the usual proof |
| A surname after marriage | Ask the regional centre which row applies and what proof it takes | Ask the centre |
| More than 3 years since registration | The institute does not accept a correction. See the section below | Often the only link left |
The clock is the first thing to check. Find your date of registration before you read anything else.
How Do You Apply?
Step 1: Find your date of registration
On your identity card or admission confirmation. Work out if you are within three years.
Step 2: Compare the record with your papers
Your name, both parents' names and the date of birth, against the papers you gave at admission.
Step 3: Decide if it is a correction or a change
A slip in typing, or a name that is in fact different now.
Step 4: Sign in to the institute's learner portal
With your enrolment number, and open the e-services for correction in admission records.
Step 5: Choose the right row and enter the corrected details
Type the name letter by letter, as on the supporting paper.
Step 6: Upload the supporting documents and pay online
The correction fee, and the fee for the revised document where papers have been issued.
Step 7: Hand back the wrong originals, if any were issued
To your regional centre, as it directs, with a covering letter and the payment receipt. Keep copies.
Step 8: Check the revised documents
Read every name and the date of birth on the mark sheet and the certificate when they arrive.
If the portal will not take your request, write to the regional centre with your enrolment number and ask why. Keep the reply.
Which Proof Should You Upload?
The portal lists what it wants for each row. This is a list to start from.
For a correction
- A paper that shows the right spelling: an earlier school certificate, the birth certificate or Aadhaar
- For a parent's name, that parent's identity proof
- The identity card or admission confirmation
- A clear scan, within the size the portal allows
For a change
- The Gazette notification of the change of name
- The newspaper notice and the affidavit, where the portal or the centre asks for them
- Identity proof in the new name
- For a married name, the marriage certificate
We could not confirm the institute's exact list for a change of name, so check the portal and ask the regional centre before you prepare papers. For a child, see name change in birth certificate, since the birth certificate is the usual proof.
What Happens to Papers Already Issued?
- The institute issues revised documents only after you submit the originals that carry the incorrect details: the mark sheet, the migration certificate, and the provisional or final certificate.
- You pay the fee for the revised documents as well as the correction fee.
- Send the originals to the regional centre as it directs. Keep clear copies and proof of posting.
- Do not use a wrong certificate for an admission or a job while a correction is pending, if you can avoid it. Explain the position and show the receipt.
- A duplicate is a different request, for a lost paper. It carries the same particulars as the original.
If a college admission is due while your originals are with the institute, ask the regional centre for a letter that the documents are under correction, and ask the college for time.
What If More Than Three Years Have Passed?
The institute's procedure says no request for correction is accepted after three years from registration. So the certificate is likely to stay as it is.
- Confirm the dates. Check the date of registration on your identity card. People often count from the result, which is later.
- Ask the regional centre in writing if anything can be done in your case, and keep the reply.
- Bring your other papers to the certificate, where the name on it is one you can live with. Aadhaar treats a small spelling correction as a minor change.
- Link the two forms, where you cannot. A Gazette notice that states the name on the certificate and your present name, joined by alias, or a public notice that your name was wrongly written in your educational documents, is the public paper that connects them.
- Take a lawyer's advice where a clear mistake is being left uncorrected and a job or an admission depends on it.
See alias name in a gazette notification and public notice for wrongly written name.
How Do You Get It Right at Admission?
- Fill the form yourself, or sit beside the person who fills it.
- Copy your name from your earlier school certificate or birth certificate, letter by letter.
- Copy both parents' names from their own identity papers.
- Make sure Aadhaar agrees before you start. If it does not, correct Aadhaar first.
- Read the preview before you pay.
- Read the identity card the day it comes, and apply for a correction at once if a letter is wrong.
If you have changed your name by Gazette before enrolling, register in the new name and upload the Gazette notification with your papers.
How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
The institute is a national board, so the Gazette of India is the one to use. Use this for a change of name, or to link two forms where the time for correction is over.
Step 1: Check the clock, and ask the regional centre
If a correction is still open to you, it is cheaper and needs no Gazette.
Step 2: Choose the right kind of notice
A change of name notice for a new name or an alias. A public notice where your name was wrongly written in your educational documents.
Step 3: Fix the exact name
The spelling, spacing and order to be used on every paper.
Step 4: Make the affidavit or the undertaking
An affidavit before a notary for a change of name. An undertaking for a public notice. For a learner under 18, the parents sign.
Step 5: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 6: Type the form and prepare the CD
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed with two witnesses, the same text on a CD in MS Word, photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult's change of name, Rs 1,700 for a minor's and Rs 1,400 for a public notice. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then use the Gazette
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Upload the published Gazette with a change request, or keep it with the certificate.
Would the Institute Accept the Uttarakhand Gazette?
We could not confirm which Gazette it accepts. It is a national board, and its certificates are used across the country. The Gazette of India is the safer choice.
Step 1: Ask the regional centre which Gazette it accepts
By email, so you have the answer in writing.
Step 2: Think about where the certificate will be used
For a college outside the state, a central post or a passport, choose the Gazette of India.
Step 3: If a state notice is accepted, contact the Roorkee press
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private notice of the kind you need is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Learners Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Letting an agent fill the admission form unchecked | Read the preview and the identity card yourself |
| Counting three years from the result | Count from the date of registration |
| Waiting for the mark sheet before asking | Apply before the admit card is issued |
| Filing a change as a correction | Choose the row that is true, with the right proof |
| Sending papers by post without applying online | The request is made through e-services |
| Keeping the wrong originals | Revised papers come only after they are handed back |
| Posting originals without copies | Keep clear copies and proof of posting |
| Paying for a Gazette while a correction is still open | Use the correction first |
| Applying for a duplicate in place of a correction | A duplicate repeats the mistake |
A typical case we handle: a young man in Rishikesh passed his secondary examination from the open school, with an admission form filled at a cyber cafe that left out his surname. He noticed it on the mark sheet and asked us for a Gazette. He had registered two years earlier, so the correction was still open. He applied through e-services with his birth certificate, returned the mark sheet to the regional centre, and received revised papers. No Gazette was needed. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
Within three years of registration, for a typing slip, you need only the institute's portal and one supporting paper. We are useful where you have changed your name, or where the three years are over and a Gazette has to link the certificate to your other papers.
Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?
All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The correction is made online, with the regional centre shown in your record. The Gazette file, where one is needed, is prepared on WhatsApp.
