Joint Bank Account Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
For husbands and wives, parents and children, and brothers in Uttarakhand who hold a bank account or fixed deposit jointly, where one holder's name differs from that holder's Aadhaar or PAN: how the bank reads each holder, how one name is corrected, why deposits and nominees should be checked too, and why it should be done while both holders are living.
A joint bank account name mismatch is corrected at the branch for the holder whose name differs, on that holder's Aadhaar and PAN. Ask for each fixed deposit to be corrected too, and review the nominees. Do it while all holders are living. No Gazette is needed for a spelling or a married surname.

Many families in Uttarakhand keep their savings in joint names: a husband and wife, a widow and her son, two brothers who share land. Each holder's name was written when the account was opened, often decades ago. A joint bank account name mismatch is one holder's name that no longer matches that holder's papers. This page explains joint bank account name mismatch.
We do not correct bank records, and this subject needs no Gazette in most cases. The nomination rules are from the Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025, as reported when they took effect. For a single holder's account, read name change in bank records.
What Is a Joint Account, in Brief?
- What it is. An account or deposit held in two or more names.
- The first holder. Named first, often the one whose PAN the bank uses for tax on interest.
- The mode of operation. Either or survivor, former or survivor, jointly, or anyone or survivor.
- Each holder's record. The bank keeps identity details for every holder.
- Nominees. Persons named to receive the money after the holders, for the legal heirs.
A joint account is several records joined. One holder's name can be wrong while the others are right, and the bank corrects that one.
What Applies?
The nomination rows are from reports of the Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025 provisions that took effect on 1 November 2025. The rest is common banking practice.
| Point | What applies |
|---|---|
| Up to four nominees | From 1 November 2025, a deposit account may have up to four nominees |
| Simultaneous or successive | Simultaneous nominees share by stated percentages adding to 100. Successive nominees take in turn |
| Lockers | Up to four nominees, successively only |
| Joint consent | Reports say a nomination in a joint account without the other holders' consent is not valid |
| Each holder's identity | Banks keep KYC for every holder, and correct each holder's name on that holder's papers |
| Survivor clause | Under an either or survivor mode, the survivor can continue or close the account after a death |
A nominee is not the owner. Reports of the new rules stress that nominees act for the legal heirs.
Where Is Each Holder's Name Written?
| Record | Whose name | Where it is corrected |
|---|---|---|
| The account and passbook | Every holder | The branch |
| Each fixed deposit | The holders of that deposit | The branch, deposit by deposit |
| The KYC record | Each holder, separately | The branch, on each holder's papers |
| The nomination | The nominees | The branch, with all holders' consent |
| Aadhaar and PAN | Each holder's own | Their own offices |
The second row is the one families forget. A deposit made years ago may still carry an old form of a name after the account itself is corrected.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
One holder's spelling
- A short name or a missing surname for one holder
- The others are right
- Corrected for that holder alone
A wife's two names
- Maiden name in the account, married name on Aadhaar
- Or the reverse
- Linked by the marriage certificate
A holder has died
- The death certificate names the holder differently
- The survivor's claim is questioned
- Linking papers, or a corrected certificate
The third is the one to prevent. A correction a holder can ask for in five minutes may take months after the holder has died.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| One holder's name is a short form | The branch, on that holder's Aadhaar and PAN | No |
| A wife's maiden name in the account | The branch, on the marriage certificate, if she wishes | No |
| A fixed deposit carries the old form | The branch, deposit by deposit | No |
| Aadhaar is the wrong paper | Correct Aadhaar, then the bank | No |
| A holder has died, and names differ | The death certificate, and the bank's claim process | No |
| The nominee's name differs | The nomination, with all holders' consent | No |
| The locker hirers' names differ | The locker agreement | No |
| A holder changed a name by choice | Gazette, then Aadhaar, PAN and the bank | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows. The branch and the identity offices settle the rest.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Each bank has its own form.
Step 1: Read every holder's name on the passbook's first page
And on the fixed deposit receipts, which are separate records.
Step 2: Put each holder's Aadhaar and PAN beside it
Each holder's name is checked against that holder's own papers.
Step 3: Note the mode of operation
Either or survivor, former or survivor, jointly, or as the account says.
Step 4: Ask the branch to correct the name of the holder whose papers differ
With that holder's Aadhaar and PAN, and a linking paper where the name has changed.
Step 5: Ask for each fixed deposit to be corrected too
A deposit may not follow the account automatically.
Step 6: Review the nominees while you are there
Since November 2025 a deposit can have up to four.
Step 7: Have every holder complete re-KYC when the bank asks
Each joint holder's details are kept up to date separately.
Step 8: Keep the corrected passbook page with the holders' papers
The survivor or nominee will need it one day.
What About a Husband and Wife?
- A couple often opened a joint account soon after marriage, with the wife's name as it was then.
- Her Aadhaar and PAN may since carry her married name, or still her maiden name.
- Neither is wrong. The account should follow whichever her papers carry.
- If she has taken her husband's surname, the branch updates her name on the marriage certificate and her Aadhaar.
- If she keeps her maiden name, leave the account as it is.
- Read the nomination too. A couple's nominees are often children named by home names.
Read name change after marriage and is a name change compulsory after marriage.
What About Fixed Deposits?
- Each fixed deposit is its own record, with its own receipt.
- A correction to the savings account may not reach deposits made earlier.
- Ask the branch to list every deposit in the holders' names, and correct each one.
- Read each deposit's mode of operation and nominee as well.
- A deposit renewed automatically may carry the old name for years.
- Keep the corrected receipts with the passbook.
Read senior citizens savings scheme name correction, for deposits at the post office.
What About Nominees and the New Rules?
- From 1 November 2025, a deposit account may have up to four nominees.
- They can be simultaneous, with percentage shares adding to 100, or successive, one after another.
- Reports of the new rules say a nomination in a joint account needs the other holders' consent.
- Write each nominee's name as on that nominee's Aadhaar.
- A nominee is not the owner. The nominee receives the money for the legal heirs.
- Review the nominees after a marriage, a birth, a death or a divorce.
What Happens When a Holder Dies?
- Under an either or survivor mode, the survivor can continue or close the account.
- The bank reads the death certificate against the deceased holder's name in the account.
- A death certificate in a short name, against a full name in the account, raises a question.
- The survivor shows papers linking the names: Aadhaar, PAN, the family register.
- Where the death certificate is plainly wrong, the Registrar can correct it.
- Correcting the account while both holders are living spares the survivor all of this.
Read name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate and pension and family pension records.
What About Re-KYC and PAN?
- Banks update each holder's KYC from time to time, and ask for fresh papers.
- A holder whose name differs from Aadhaar may be asked to explain or correct it then.
- An account can be restricted where a holder does not complete re-KYC.
- The first holder's PAN is commonly used for tax on interest. It should match.
- Older holders often have PAN in one form and the account in another. Bring them together.
- Answer a bank's re-KYC message promptly, for every holder.
Read name change in PAN card and CKYC name mismatch.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Only where a holder has changed a name by choice. A spelling or a married surname needs papers already held.
Step 1: Confirm that a holder's name has in fact changed
A spelling, or a married surname, is not a change by choice.
Step 2: Ask the branch what it wants for a complete change
Banks commonly accept a Gazette, and ask for Aadhaar and PAN to follow it.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar, PAN and the account.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar, PAN, and the bank.
Which Gazette Should You Use?
Banks are centrally regulated and read Aadhaar and PAN. The Gazette of India is the one to use.
Step 1: Remember who regulates banks
The Reserve Bank of India, a central body.
Step 2: Remember the papers they read
Aadhaar and PAN, which are central.
Step 3: Prefer the Gazette of India
It is the one banks commonly ask for.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits another purpose
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search egazette.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Joint Holders Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Correcting the account, not the deposits | Correct each deposit too |
| Leaving it until a holder dies | Correct it while all are living |
| A nominee by a home name | The nominee's Aadhaar name |
| One holder nominating alone | All holders consent |
| Ignoring a re-KYC message | Complete it for every holder |
| The first holder's PAN in another form | Bring PAN and the account together |
| Changing a wife's surname she does not use | Follow her papers |
| Closing a joint account in anger | Ask the branch about conversion |
| Asking for a Gazette for a spelling | The branch corrects it |
A typical case we handle: a couple in Almora held a joint account and three fixed deposits, opened in 1998 as "Bhuwan" and "Basanti". Their Aadhaar read "Bhuwan Chandra Joshi" and "Basanti Joshi". Their son asked us whether a Gazette was needed before his father, who was unwell, could correct them. It was not. The father and mother took their Aadhaar and PAN to the branch, which corrected the account and each deposit, and they named their son and daughter as nominees together. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

That a deposit account may have up to four nominees from 1 November 2025, simultaneously or successively, that lockers allow successive nominees only, that nominees act for the legal heirs, and that a nomination in a joint account needs the other holders' consent, are from reports of the Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025 provisions brought into force on that date. The modes of operation, separate KYC for each holder, re-KYC, the use of the first holder's PAN and the correction of each deposit are common banking practice, and vary by bank. We did not read the Banking Companies (Nomination) Rules, 2025. The branch is the authority.
