Bank Locker Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand

For people who hold a safe deposit locker, and families claiming one, where the hirer's or the nominee's name in the bank's record differs from identity papers: which papers carry the name, how the branch corrects them, and what a nominee or an heir needs after a death.

Quick answer

A bank locker name mismatch is corrected at the branch that holds the locker, on a written request with identity papers. Correct Aadhaar or PAN first if one of them is the odd paper. Have the nomination read as the nominee's own Aadhaar does. Do it while the hirer is alive. A spelling needs no Gazette.

A locker carries the hirer name on the agreement, account and access record and the nominee name on the nomination, so correct them at the branch.

A locker is hired once and visited a few times a year. The agreement may be twenty years old, signed in a name the hirer no longer uses. A bank locker name mismatch is noticed on the day the bank asks for a fresh agreement, or on the day a family comes with a death certificate. This page explains bank locker name mismatch for hirers and families in Uttarakhand.

We do not deal with banks, and this subject seldom needs a Gazette. The rules on agreements, nomination and claims are from a large bank's own locker page, and from published summaries of the central bank's instructions of 2021 and directions of 2025. How a branch corrects a name is general practice. For the account behind the locker, read name change in bank records.

What Is a Locker, and Which Papers Go With It?

  • What it is. A small steel compartment in a bank's vault, rented by a customer to keep jewellery and papers.
  • The relationship. The customer hires the space. The bank does not know or record what is inside.
  • The agreement. Signed by the bank and the hirer, on stamp paper, setting out who may operate the locker and how.
  • The linked account. A savings account or a deposit at the same branch, from which the rent is taken.
  • The access record. A register or a system entry, signed each time the locker is opened.
  • The nomination. A form naming who may take the contents after the hirer's death.

The hirer's name is on all four papers, and the nominee's on one. The bank reads them each time the vault is opened, and far more closely when the person at the counter is not the hirer.

What Do the Published Rules Say?

From a large public bank's own page on lockers, and from published summaries of the central bank's revised instructions of August 2021 and its directions of September 2025 on claims of deceased customers. We did not read the central bank's texts on its own site.

What published rules say about a bank locker's agreement, nomination and claims
PointWhat the papers say
The agreementA copy signed by both parties is furnished to the hirer
NominationAvailable for a locker hired singly or jointly. Up to four nominees can be registered, in succession, under the 2025 rules
A nominee's accessOn the death of a sole hirer, the bank allows the nominee access and liberty to remove the contents
Joint hirersWhere the locker was hired with a survivorship clause, the bank follows that mandate on a hirer's death
No court paperWhere a nomination or survivorship clause exists, access is given without insisting on a succession certificate or probate
TimeThe bank processes a locker claim within 15 days and fixes a date for taking an inventory
RentWhere rent is overdue, access is allowed only after it is collected

These rules are generous to a nominee. They work only when the bank can see that the person in front of it is the nominee it recorded, and that the dead hirer is the hirer on its agreement. Both are questions of names.

Which Names Does a Locker Record Hold?

The names in a bank locker record and what each is read against
PaperName on itRead against
The locker agreementEach hirer, as written and signed on the dayThe identity paper shown at each visit
The linked accountThe account holderThe hirer's name on the agreement
The bank's customer recordThe hirer, from KYC papersAadhaar and PAN, at each renewal of KYC
The access recordThe hirer's signatureThe specimen signature the bank holds
The nominationEach nominee, as the hirer wrote itThe nominee's own papers, after a death

The agreement is the oldest of these and the least read. A hirer who has corrected the savings account three times may still be "Smt. Kamla" on a locker agreement of 2004.

What Kinds of Problem Are There?

The hirer, written differently

  • A spelling, initials or a missing surname on the agreement
  • Or the identity paper has changed since
  • Cured at the branch, on identity papers

A name that changed

  • A woman hired the locker before marriage
  • Or the hirer has changed a name by choice
  • Cured by the marriage certificate, or a Gazette, with updated identity papers

A nominee, or nobody, on record

  • The nominee is written by a home name, or has died, or was never named
  • The hirer is alive and can put it right in an afternoon
  • After the hirer's death it cannot be corrected. It can only be explained, or the heirs claim

The third kind causes the longest delays, and is the only one the family cannot cure. A hirer's own name can be corrected at any time. A nomination dies with the hirer.

A Gazette appears once in eight rows. For the rest the branch is the place.

How Do You Put It Right?

This is the general method. Each bank has its own forms.

Step 1: Find your copy of the locker agreement

The bank gives the hirer a signed copy. Note the hirers' names, the locker number and how it is to be operated.

Step 2: Put Aadhaar and PAN beside it

The names should read alike, letter by letter.

Step 3: Ask the branch what name its locker record carries

And who is recorded as nominee. The agreement and the bank's system can differ.

Step 4: Correct Aadhaar or PAN first, if one of them is wrong

At its own office.

Step 5: Give the branch a written request to correct the hirer's name

With identity papers, and the marriage certificate where a surname has changed. The linked account is corrected with it.

Step 6: Sign a fresh agreement where the bank asks for one

In the corrected name. Read it before signing, and keep your copy.

Step 7: Register or correct the nomination

Each nominee named as on that nominee's own Aadhaar, and the bank's acknowledgement kept.

Step 8: Operate the locker once in the corrected name

The access register then shows your present name and signature.

What About the Fresh Agreement?

  • The central bank's revised instructions of 2021 brought in a new form of locker agreement, as reports of them say. Banks have been asking existing hirers to sign it.
  • That signing is the best chance a hirer gets to put the name right. The bank is preparing a new paper anyway.
  • The branch fills the agreement from its own record. If that record carries an old name, so will the new agreement.
  • Read the names before you sign. Ask for the record to be corrected first, and the agreement printed after.
  • Every joint hirer signs. Each should check his or her own name.
  • Keep the copy the bank gives you with your other papers, where the family can find it.

A hirer who signs a new agreement in a name that matches nothing else has renewed the problem for another twenty years. Read CKYC name mismatch, since the same visit is a chance to have the bank's KYC record corrected.

What About Joint Hirers?

  • A locker is often hired by a husband and wife, or a parent and a child, with an instruction on who may operate it.
  • The common instructions let either hirer operate alone, and let the survivor carry on after one dies.
  • A large bank's page says that where a locker was hired with a survivorship clause, it follows that mandate on a hirer's death.
  • So the survivor's name on the agreement has to be the survivor's name on identity papers. A wife written as "Mrs Sharma" is not identified by that.
  • Where the instruction requires both to operate together, the death of one leaves the other unable to open the locker alone.
  • Ask the branch to read out the instruction it holds. Many hirers do not remember what they chose.

Read name change after marriage and name correction in marriage registration certificate.

What About the Nominee?

  • A nomination for a locker is separate from the nomination on the savings account. Having one does not give the other.
  • A large bank's page says up to four nominees can be registered for a locker, in succession, under the 2025 rules. The next becomes the nominee only if the one before has died.
  • A regional bank of this state explains it the same way: a nominee lower in the order takes effect only after the death of those above.
  • The hirer writes the nominee's name. Copy it from the nominee's Aadhaar, with the relationship and the address.
  • A daughter named before her marriage should be named afresh in her present name, or her marriage certificate kept with the papers.
  • Ask for the bank's acknowledgement of the nomination, and keep it with the agreement.

Read nominee name mismatch in a bank claim for the same question on a deposit account.

What Happens After the Hirer's Death?

  1. Tell the branch, in writing, with the death certificate.
  2. Who may claim. The nominee, or the surviving joint hirer under a survivorship clause. Otherwise the legal heirs.
  3. What is compared. The dead hirer's name on the death certificate with the agreement. The claimant's name on the nomination with the claimant's identity papers.
  4. No court paper for a nominee. A summary of the 2025 directions says access is given without insisting on a succession certificate or probate, where a nomination or survivorship clause exists.
  5. The inventory. The locker is opened before the claimant and the bank's officers, and a list of the contents is made and signed.
  6. Without a nominee. The bank asks who the heirs are and what proof they bring. For valuable contents or a divided family it may ask for more.

A nominee receives the contents on behalf of whoever is entitled to them. Who owns the jewellery in the end is a question of succession, not of the nomination. Read name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate, succession certificate name mismatch and will and probate name mismatch.

What About a Locker Left Unvisited?

  • Reports of the 2021 instructions say a locker that stays inoperative for seven years, with a hirer who cannot be located, may be dealt with by the bank: the contents passed to the nominee or heirs, or disposed of.
  • They also say a bank may break open a locker for unpaid rent, after notice to the hirer.
  • Notice goes to the name, address and mobile number on the bank's record.
  • A hirer who has moved to a son's home in another city, or whose record carries an old name and address, may never receive it.
  • Families from the hills who settled in the plains, and the reverse, often leave a locker in the old town. Visit it, or close it.
  • Keep the rent paid, the address current and the mobile number your own.

Read mobile SIM ownership name change and gold loan name mismatch, where a family's ornaments are held on a name in another way.

Where Does a Gazette Come In?

Only where the hirer has changed a name by choice, and the bank asks for a Gazette before it changes its record. It has no part in a spelling, a married surname, a nominee's name or a dead hirer's name.

Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or a married surname

A bank corrects those on identity papers and a marriage certificate.

Step 2: Ask the branch what it needs to change the hirer's name

Many ask for a Gazette for a change of name by choice.

Step 3: Fix the exact new name

The spelling that will go on Aadhaar, PAN, the account and the locker agreement.

Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice

Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar and PAN, the bank account and the locker agreement.

Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?

A bank follows Aadhaar and PAN, which are central records. The Gazette of India is the one to prefer.

Step 1: Ask the branch which Gazette it accepts

A bank follows Aadhaar and PAN.

Step 2: Think about your other accounts and investments

The Gazette of India serves them all.

Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit

Keep photocopies of everything.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Hirers Make?

Common mistakes with names on a bank locker
MistakeWhat to do
Never reading the locker agreementRead the names on your copy
Correcting the savings account and forgetting the lockerAsk for both together
Signing the fresh agreement without reading itCheck each hirer's name first
Assuming the account's nominee covers the lockerThe locker needs its own nomination
Writing a nominee's name from memoryCopy it from the nominee's Aadhaar
Not knowing the operating instructionAsk the branch to read it out
Leaving the locker unvisited for yearsOperate it, and keep the rent paid
Telling nobody at home about the lockerTell the family, and show them the papers
Paying for a Gazette to fix a spellingThe branch corrects it on identity papers

A typical case we handle: a retired teacher in Haldwani died, leaving a locker hired in 1998. The agreement named him "G. C. Pande", and the nomination named his wife "Smt. Tara". His death certificate read "Girish Chandra Pandey", and her Aadhaar "Tara Devi Pandey". The branch held the claim, and their son asked us for a Gazette for both. Nobody had changed a name. The bank's own account record carried his full name against the same customer number. Her marriage certificate and the family register showed her as his wife, and the branch opened the locker for her with an inventory. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

What is a lawyer's job, not ours

A dispute among heirs over the contents, a bank's refusal to give access, and a claim for loss of what was in a locker.

When you do not need us

For a spelling, initials, a married surname, a nominee's name and a family's claim. The branch settles those on identity papers and certificates. We are useful only where the hirer has changed a name by choice and a Gazette notification is asked for.

Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?

All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The record is corrected at the branch that holds the locker. For the papers behind it, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one to correct.

Bank Locker Name Mismatch: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bank locker name mismatch?+
A difference between the hirer's or a nominee's name in a bank's locker record and that person's identity papers, which holds up access to the locker or a family's claim to its contents.
Who corrects the name on a locker?+
The branch that holds the locker, on a written request with identity papers. The linked account is corrected with it.
Do I need a Gazette or an affidavit?+
Not for a spelling or a married surname. A bank may ask for a Gazette where the hirer has changed a name by choice.
Do I get a copy of the locker agreement?+
Yes. A large bank's own page says a copy of the agreement signed by both parties is furnished to the hirer.
The bank asked me to sign a new agreement. Which name do I sign in?+
Your name as on Aadhaar and PAN today. If the bank's record carries an older form, ask for it to be corrected first.
I hired the locker before marriage. My surname has changed. What do I do?+
Give the branch the marriage certificate and identity papers in your present name, and ask for the locker record and the account to be updated together.
The bank will not let me open my locker because my identity card reads differently. What now?+
Ask what it needs in writing. Usually it is a corrected identity paper, or a paper that links the two names, such as a marriage certificate.
Can a locker have a nominee?+
Yes. A large bank's page says nomination is available for a locker hired singly or jointly, with up to four nominees registered in succession under the 2025 rules.
The hirer has died. Who can open the locker?+
The nominee, or the surviving joint hirer under a survivorship clause. Where there is neither, the legal heirs claim, on the papers the bank asks for.
Does the bank need a succession certificate from a nominee?+
A summary of the central bank's 2025 directions says that where a nomination or survivorship clause exists, access is given without insisting on a succession certificate or probate.
How long does the bank take after a death?+
The same summary says the bank processes a locker claim within 15 days and fixes a date for taking an inventory.
The nominee's name in the bank's record is misspelt. Does that matter?+
It can delay the claim. Correct the nomination now, while the hirer is alive. After a death the nominee needs a paper that links the two forms.
We hold the locker jointly. One name is wrong. Is the whole record affected?+
Each hirer's name is read against that hirer's own papers. Have the wrong one corrected, and check the operating instruction at the same time.
I have not opened my locker for years. Is that a problem?+
It can be. Reports of the 2021 instructions say a locker inoperative for seven years, whose hirer cannot be traced, may be opened and its contents passed on. Keep your contact details current.
Can someone else operate my locker for me?+
Only as the bank's rules allow, on a written authority. Ask the branch for its form.
Do you deal with banks?+
No. We prepare a Gazette only where a person's own change of name needs one.

That a signed copy of the agreement goes to the hirer, that a nominee or a survivor is given access, that nomination is available with up to four nominees in succession and that overdue rent is collected before access are from a large public bank's own locker page. How successive nomination works is also as a regional bank of this state explains it. That access is given without a succession certificate where a nomination or survivorship clause exists, and the 15 days, are from a law firm's summary of the central bank's directions of September 2025. The fresh agreement, the seven-year rule and breaking open for unpaid rent are from reports of the revised instructions of August 2021. We did not read the central bank's own texts. How a branch corrects a name is general practice. Your branch is the authority.
