Signature Change After Name Change in Uttarakhand
For people who have changed a name, or are about to, and wonder what becomes of the signature: whether it has to change, where specimens are kept, how each office takes a new one, and how to keep cheques and old papers from being questioned.
A signature change after name change is a choice, not a requirement. A Gazette changes the name and says nothing of the signature. If you adopt a new one, change the name on your papers first, then give a fresh specimen in person at the bank and at every other office that holds your old one.

People who change a name often ask what to do about the signature, and are told three different things by three clerks. The honest answer is that a signature is yours to keep or to change. A signature change after name change is not a legal step. It is a round of visits. This page explains signature change after name change for people in Uttarakhand.
We prepare the Gazette notification for a change of name. A signature is outside it. How shares held on paper are handled is from the market regulator's forms, as companies publish them. Almost everything else on this page is general practice, and each office has its own form. For the name itself, read gazette name change in Uttarakhand.
What Is a Signature?
- What it is. A mark a person makes on a paper to show that the paper is theirs, or that they agree to it.
- What it need not be. A legible writing of the name. Initials, a flourish, a name in another script and a thumb impression all serve.
- Where it is recorded. Nowhere centrally. Each office that deals with you keeps a specimen of its own.
- What it is checked against. That office's specimen, and nothing else.
- Who can change it. You, by signing differently and giving each office a fresh specimen.
A name is a fact about you that the state records. A signature is a habit of your hand that each office has sampled once. That is why a change of name has a procedure and a change of signature has only a list of counters.
What Do the Papers Say?
Very little is laid down about signatures. These are the points we could tie to a paper.
| Point | What the paper says |
|---|---|
| The Gazette form | The change of name specimen is signed by the applicant in the old name, with two witnesses |
| The Gazette notice | It records the old name and the new name. It carries no signature of the new name |
| Shares held on paper | The market regulator's form for updating a holder's details lists the signature among them, with a banker's attestation in a set form |
| A small difference | For a minor mismatch in signature, the company's registrar writes to the holder at the address on record |
| A large difference | For a major mismatch, or where the registrar holds no specimen, the banker's attestation is asked for |
The first two rows are from the Government's change of name guideline as this site sets it out. The last three are from the regulator's forms of November 2021 as listed companies publish them. For banks, the tax card and the passport we found no single published rule on a new signature, and describe what is commonly done.
Where Is Your Specimen Kept?
| Office | What it holds | How it is commonly updated |
|---|---|---|
| The bank | A specimen card or a scanned image, for each account | In person, on the bank's form, with identity papers |
| The tax card | An image printed on the card | On the form for a corrected card |
| The passport | An image printed in the booklet | On a fresh application |
| The driving licence | An image taken at the transport office | When the licence is renewed or corrected |
| A company whose shares you hold | The signature on the original application or transfer | The regulator's form, with a banker's attestation |
| A demat account, a fund, an insurer | The signature on the account opening form | Each one's own request form |
| An employer | The signature in the service record | Through the office |
Aadhaar is not on this list. It holds fingerprints, iris scans and a photograph, and no signature. So Aadhaar is updated for the name alone.
What Are the Three Choices?
Keep the old signature
- Change the name on every paper, and go on signing as before
- Nothing to update on the signature side
- Best where the signature is a mark and not a readable name
Adopt a new signature
- Sign in the new name from a chosen day
- A fresh specimen at every office on the list
- Best where the old signature plainly spells the old name
Do nothing, and drift
- Sign the new way at some places and the old way at others
- The commonest course, and the one that causes returned cheques
- Not a choice anyone should make
A woman whose signature reads "Sunita Rawat" and who is now Sunita Bisht has a real reason to change it. A man whose signature is two loops and a line does not, whatever his new name is.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| A name changed by choice, and a new signature wanted | The Gazette for the name. Then a fresh specimen at each office | For the name |
| A married surname, and a new signature wanted | The papers on the marriage certificate. Then a fresh specimen | No |
| The name unchanged, the signature changed with age | A fresh specimen at the bank | No |
| A cheque returned because the signature differs | A fresh specimen, then a new cheque | No |
| A company's registrar says the signature does not match | The regulator's form, with a banker's attestation | No |
| A switch from Hindi to English, or the reverse | A fresh specimen at each office | No |
| A hand that can no longer sign | A thumb impression or mark, as the bank's rules allow | No |
| An old deed questioned for its signature | Proof that both signatures are one person's | No |
A Gazette is never for the signature. In the one row where it appears, it is for the name, and the signature follows afterwards.
How Do You Change It Everywhere?
This is the general method. Each office has its own form.
Step 1: Decide whether to keep your old signature or adopt a new one
Nothing compels a change. A new signature means a new specimen at every office that holds one.
Step 2: If you change it, fix one new signature and practise it
The same strokes each time, in the same script. Do not sign three ways in the first month.
Step 3: List every office that holds your specimen
The bank, the tax card, the passport, the demat account, any company whose shares you hold, insurers, your employer.
Step 4: Start with the bank
Go in person, with identity papers in your present name, and give a fresh specimen on the bank's form.
Step 5: Ask for a new cheque book, and stop using old signed cheques
A cheque signed the old way after the specimen has changed will be returned.
Step 6: Update the tax card and the passport when you next change them
Each carries an image of your signature, taken on its own form.
Step 7: Update shares and investments
For shares held on paper, with a banker's attestation of the signature in the set form.
Step 8: Keep one dated paper that shows both signatures
A bank's acknowledgement, or an affidavit, for the day an old paper is questioned.
What Happens at the Bank?
- A bank will not change a specimen on a letter or a phone call. It wants the customer at the counter.
- Take identity papers in your present name. Where the name has changed, take the marriage certificate or the Gazette as well.
- The name on the account is changed first, or in the same visit. A new signature on an account in the old name confuses everyone.
- You sign the bank's form the old way and the new way, before an officer who knows you or checks your papers.
- A joint account needs the other holder's knowledge, and sometimes a signature.
- Ask the branch when the new specimen will show in its system. Cheques cleared in another city are checked against that image.
Read name change in bank records, name change request letter to the bank manager and bank locker name mismatch, since a locker is opened on a signature too.
What About Cheques and Standing Instructions?
- A cheque is paid when the drawer's signature matches the specimen. A cheque signed the other way is returned.
- A returned cheque has consequences beyond the bank's charge. Do not let one happen for want of a visit.
- Cheques already given, such as post-dated ones to a lender or a landlord, carry the old signature. Replace them when the specimen changes.
- Loan repayment mandates signed on paper are checked against the specimen too. Ask the lender if a fresh mandate is needed.
- Fixed deposit receipts and their renewal forms are signed. So are withdrawal slips.
- For a few weeks after the change, sign bank papers slowly and the same way each time.
Read cheque payee name mismatch for the name on a cheque, which is a different question, and home loan name mismatch.
What About the Tax Card, Passport and Licence?
- The tax card, the passport and the driving licence each print an image of your signature.
- That image is taken from the application form, or on a pad at the office, on the day you apply.
- So it changes only when you apply again: for a corrected tax card, a fresh passport, a renewed or corrected licence.
- When you apply for the change of name on each, sign the new way on that form. The name and the signature then change together.
- Until then the card shows the old signature. That is not a fault. A card is not a specimen for anyone else.
- A bank or an office that asks you to "sign as on the tax card" is using the card as a check. Carry the paper that shows when you changed.
Read name change in PAN card, name change in passport and name change in driving licence.
What About Papers Signed the Old Way?
- A sale deed, a will, an agreement or a policy signed before the change stays good. It is judged by the signature you used then.
- The difficulty comes years later, when someone compares that paper with your signature of today.
- Keep proof of the day you changed: the bank's acknowledgement of the new specimen is the best.
- An affidavit stating that both signatures are yours, with both shown on it, is a useful paper to hold. It is not a requirement.
- A registered deed also carries your photograph and thumb impression, which do not change.
- Do not go back and re-sign old papers. Nobody asks for it, and an altered deed is worse than an old signature.

How Does the Central Gazette Route Work?
The Gazette is for the name. It is set out here because of one point people get wrong: the form is signed in the old name, and the new signature comes only after publication.
Step 1: Fix the exact new name before anything else
The signature follows the name. Settle the spelling first.
Step 2: Make the affidavit
State the old name, the new name, your father's or husband's name and your address. Sign before a notary.
Step 3: Publish the newspaper notice
In a daily local leading newspaper. Keep the original newspaper.
Step 4: Type the form, and sign it in your old name
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses. The old signature is the one to use here.
Step 5: Sign the undertaking, and prepare the CD and photographs
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 6: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 7: Send the file yourself
To the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
Step 8: Change the signature only after the Gazette is published
Then update Aadhaar and PAN, and give each office the new specimen with the Gazette.
Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
The offices that hold a specimen follow Aadhaar and PAN for the name. The Gazette of India is the one to prefer.
Step 1: Ask the bank which Gazette it accepts
It follows Aadhaar and PAN.
Step 2: Think about the tax card, the passport and investments
The Gazette of India serves them all.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do People Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Thinking a new name forces a new signature | It does not. Decide for yourself |
| Signing the Gazette form in the new name | The form is signed in the old name |
| Signing the new way before the papers carry the new name | The name first, the signature after |
| Telling the bank and nobody else | Work through the whole list |
| Issuing cheques from an old book in the new signature | Change the specimen first |
| Leaving post-dated cheques with a lender | Replace them |
| Signing three different ways in a month | Fix one, and keep to it |
| Asking for a Gazette for a signature | There is no such notification |
| Re-signing old deeds | Leave them. Keep proof of the change |
A typical case we handle: a schoolteacher in Dehradun changed her name by Gazette from "Kumari Pushpa" to "Pushpa Negi", and began signing the new name at once. Her salary account was still in the old name, and a cheque to her landlord came back. She asked us if the Gazette could be amended to show her new signature. A Gazette shows no signature. She took the notification to her branch, had the name on the account changed, gave a fresh specimen in the same visit, and replaced the cheque. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For the signature itself, always. Only you can give a specimen, and only the office can take it. We are useful for the step before it: a Gazette notification where the name is changed by choice.

That the change of name specimen is signed in the old name with two witnesses is from the Government's change of name guideline, as the other pages of this site set it out. That the signature of a holder of shares on paper is updated with a banker's attestation in a set form, and how a minor and a major mismatch are treated, are from the market regulator's forms of November 2021 as listed companies publish them. Everything else here is general practice and common sense: what a signature is, how a bank takes a fresh specimen, how cards print a signature, and what becomes of old papers. We found no single published rule for those, and banks differ. Your own branch or office is the authority.

A Signature After a Name Change: The Short Version
A change of name does not force a change of signature, and a Gazette says nothing about one. If you want a new signature, change the name on your papers first. Sign the Gazette form in the old name. After that, fix one new signature and give a fresh specimen in person at the bank, then on the forms for the tax card and passport, then for shares with a banker's attestation. Replace cheques already given, and keep proof of the day you changed.
