Aadhaar C/O Name Update in Uttarakhand: Father's or Husband's Name on Aadhaar

For people who want to add, correct or change the father's or husband's name on their Aadhaar: what the C/O line is, what the identity authority says about it, how it is updated, why it is not proof of a relationship, and why it needs no Gazette.

Quick answer

An Aadhaar C/O name update is made as part of an address update. The identity authority says relationship details are not collected in Aadhaar, that a father's or husband's name may be added in the C/O field, and that no supporting document is required for it. It needs no Gazette and no affidavit.

A woman in Uttarakhand pointing to the C/O line in the address on her Aadhaar card where a father or husband name appears
The father or husband name on Aadhaar is the C/O line of the address: it is changed by an address update, needs no document and no Gazette.

People say "my father's name is wrong on my Aadhaar", or "I want my husband's name on it now". They are looking at the first line of the address, which begins C/O. An Aadhaar C/O name update is simpler than a change of name, and is often mistaken for one. This page explains Aadhaar C/O name update for people in Uttarakhand.

We do not update Aadhaar, and this subject needs no Gazette. What the C/O field is, and that it needs no document, are from the identity authority's own answers and forms. For your own name on Aadhaar, read name change in Aadhaar card.

What Is the C/O Line, in Brief?

  • Where it is. At the start of the address on Aadhaar.
  • What it means. Care of: a person through whom post reaches you.
  • Whose name. Usually a father's, a husband's or a guardian's.
  • What it is part of. The address. Not the name, and not a record of family.
  • Is it needed. No. It is optional.

Aadhaar has no field for "father's name" or "husband's name". The care-of line is the nearest thing on the card, and offices and families alike read it as if it were one.

What Does the Authority Say?

From the identity authority's published answers and its enrolment and update forms.

What the identity authority says about the care-of field of Aadhaar
PointWhat the authority says
RelationshipsRelationship details are not collected in Aadhaar
Adding a nameThere is an option to add the name of a father, husband or other person in the C/O field
DocumentsIt is part of the address, and no documentary support is required for it
The form"Care of" is marked optional. Filling it is optional, and no supporting document is required
Is it mandatoryNo. C/O details are used for letter delivery, and are part of the address
Older formAn earlier update form offered C/O, D/O, S/O, W/O and H/O to choose from

So the authority does not check who the named person is, and does not certify that he is your father or husband. That one fact explains everything else on this page.

How Does the C/O Line Sit Beside Other Records?

Where a father's or husband's name is recorded and what each record is
RecordWhat it holdsIs it proof of the relationship?
Aadhaar's C/O lineA name for delivering postNo
PANA parent's name, given at applicationNot by itself
A birth certificateThe parents' names, registeredYes, of parentage
A marriage certificateBoth spouses' names, registeredYes, of the marriage
A class 10 certificateThe parents' names, from the schoolWidely accepted
A passportParents' and spouse's names, on its last pageWidely accepted

An office that needs to know who your father or husband is should be shown the third or fourth row. Many ask for Aadhaar instead, and read the first.

What Kinds of Request Are There?

A spelling in the line

  • The father's or husband's name is misspelt
  • Typed by an operator years ago
  • Corrected by an address update, to his own Aadhaar's spelling

A different person

  • Father to husband after marriage, or back again
  • A guardian replaced by a parent
  • The same address update, with the new name

Not the C/O line at all

  • The person's own name is to change, such as a surname after marriage
  • That is a name update, with its own papers and limits
  • The two can be done together, and are still two things

The third is where confusion costs most. A woman who only wants her husband's name to appear need not touch her own name, or spend one of her two name updates.

No row needs a Gazette for the care-of line itself. We say so to everyone who asks.

How Is It Updated?

This is the general method. The line is part of the address, so it is changed by an address update.

Step 1: Look at the address on your Aadhaar

The first line may begin C/O, or on an older card S/O, D/O or W/O, followed by a name.

Step 2: Decide what you want there

A father's name, a husband's name, another person's, a corrected spelling, or nothing at all.

Step 3: Check that person's name on his or her own Aadhaar

Use that spelling. Offices will lay the two cards side by side.

Step 4: Ask for an address update, with the care-of line as you want it

At an Aadhaar centre, or through the online address facility where it serves.

Step 5: Give what is asked for the address itself

The care-of line needs no supporting document. The address may.

Step 6: Read the screen or the preview before confirming

The care-of name, in both scripts, and the rest of the address.

Step 7: Download the updated Aadhaar when the request is done

And check the line once more.

Step 8: Where an office wants proof of the relationship, give the right paper

A birth certificate or a marriage certificate. The care-of line is not that proof.

What About After Marriage?

  • A woman's Aadhaar, made before marriage, usually has her father's name in the care-of line and her parents' address.
  • After marriage she often needs her husband's address on it, and his name in the line.
  • Both are address details, changed by one address update.
  • Her own name stays exactly as it was, unless she chooses to change it.
  • No law asks her to take his surname, and nothing about the care-of line requires it.
  • If she does want his surname, that is a separate name update, usually on the marriage certificate.

Read name change after marriage, is a name change compulsory after marriage and Kumari, Devi and the husband’s surname.

Why Is It Not Proof of a Relationship?

  • The authority says it does not collect relationship details.
  • It asks for no document for the care-of name, and so checks nothing about it.
  • A name there shows only that someone asked for it to be written.
  • Yet banks, schools and offices often ask for Aadhaar "to verify the father's name".
  • Where they do, and the line agrees with your other papers, there is no harm.
  • Where it disagrees, or is blank, offer the birth certificate, the class 10 certificate or the marriage certificate. Those are the papers that record a relationship.

Read father’s name change and correction, mother’s name and a single mother’s child and the father’s name.

How Should the Name Be Spelt?

  • Even though the authority does not check the line, others read it.
  • So spell the name exactly as that person's own Aadhaar has it.
  • Leave out titles: Shri, Late, Mr, Dr.
  • Read the local-script line as well as the English one before confirming.
  • Keep the same spelling of your father's or husband's name on PAN, school records and the bank.
  • Where his own papers disagree with each other, settle his first. Yours follow.

Read father’s name correction in PAN card and Hindi to English name spelling difference.

What About Older Cards?

  • Earlier Aadhaar letters and an earlier update form used S/O, D/O, W/O and H/O as well as C/O.
  • The present forms have a single care-of line.
  • A card that says W/O is still your Aadhaar. It has not lapsed.
  • When you next update the address, the line will appear in the present form.
  • A card that says D/O after marriage is not wrong, and need not be changed for that reason alone.
  • Change it when you are updating the address in any case, or when an office's question makes it worth the visit.

We could not find a published statement of when the older prefixes were dropped. The forms we read carry only care of.

What About the Update Limit?

  • The authority limits name updates to two in a lifetime.
  • Its limits are stated for name, gender and date of birth.
  • The care-of line is part of the address.
  • So a change to it should not count against the name limit.
  • At a centre, say plainly that you want an address update only, and check the slip names only the address.
  • An operator who "also fixes" your name, unasked, may spend a name update you needed later.

Read Aadhaar name update limit exceeded, on what happens when both are used.

Where Does a Gazette Come In?

Not for the care-of line. Only where a person's own name has changed: yours, or your father's or husband's, in which case the Gazette is his.

Step 1: Confirm whose name is in fact changing

The care-of line is corrected at Aadhaar. A Gazette is for a person whose own name has changed.

Step 2: If it is your father's or husband's name that changed, the Gazette is his

He applies for it. You then use his new name in your care-of line.

Step 3: If it is your own name, fix the exact spelling

As it will stand on Aadhaar, PAN and a passport.

Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice

Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update the name on Aadhaar

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. The care-of line can be set at the same visit.

Which Gazette Should You Use?

None, for the care-of line. For a change of your own name on Aadhaar, the Gazette of India.

Step 1: Remember that the care-of line needs no Gazette of any kind

It needs no supporting document at all.

Step 2: For a change of your own name, remember who decides

The identity authority, a central body.

Step 3: Prefer the Gazette of India

Our Aadhaar page explains what is known about a state Gazette there.

Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits another purpose

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search egazette.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do People Make?

Common mistakes with the care-of line of Aadhaar
MistakeWhat to do
Thinking the C/O line is the father's name on recordIt is an address detail
Asking for a Gazette to change itNone is needed
Changing your own name when you only wanted his in the lineAn address update only
Spelling his name from memoryFrom his own Aadhaar
Adding Shri or LateThe name alone
Not reading the local-script lineRead both before confirming
Offering Aadhaar as proof of a relationshipA birth or marriage certificate
Letting the operator alter the name tooSay address only, and check the slip
Paying someone to "change father's name in Aadhaar"It needs no document, and no agent

A typical case we handle: a woman in Rudrapur, recently married, was told by a relative that she needed a Gazette to "put her husband's name on her Aadhaar". She wrote to ask what it would cost. We asked what she wanted changed. Her own name was to stay as it was. She wanted his name and their new address to appear. That is an address update, with no Gazette and no affidavit. She did it at an Aadhaar centre, and paid us nothing. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

When you do not need us

For anything to do with the care-of line. An address update settles it. We are useful only where a person's own name has changed and a Gazette notification is needed.

Which Areas of Uttarakhand Do We Cover?

All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. An address update is made at any Aadhaar centre. Send a photo of your Aadhaar on WhatsApp and say what you want changed, and we will tell you if it is the line or the name.

Can a married woman move her Aadhaar address to her husband's address without documents in her own name?

Yes. Since January 2023 UIDAI has offered a Head of Family based online address update: she uploads a proof of relationship, such as a marriage certificate, ration card, mark sheet or passport naming both, and the head of family approves by OTP.

Who can be the head of family for this?

Reports of UIDAI's facility say any resident above 18 can act as head of family and share his or her address with relatives updating their Aadhaar.

What if there is no relationship document?

UIDAI allows a self-declaration by the head of family in its prescribed format in place of a proof of relationship.

How long does the head of family have to approve?

Reports say the head of family must approve the request on myAadhaar within 30 days of the notification. If not approved in that time, the request is closed.

What does a Head of Family address update cost?

At launch UIDAI gave a fee of Rs 50, not refunded if the request is closed or rejected. Its present fee chart gives Rs 75 for a demographic update, so check the fee shown on the portal.

Is Aadhaar proof of date of birth either?

No. UIDAI's circular 08 of 2023 says Aadhaar can establish identity but is not, by itself, proof of date of birth. Read our page on the Aadhaar date of birth limit.

No. Neither is needed for the care-of line. A Gazette is for a person whose own name has changed.
How do I replace my father's name with my husband's after marriage?+
Through an address update, giving your husband's name in the care-of line. You need not change your own name to do it.
Does changing the C/O name use up one of my two name updates?+
The care-of line is part of the address, not the name. The authority's limits are stated for name, gender and date of birth. Confirm at the centre that only the address is being updated.
My old Aadhaar says S/O or W/O. Is that still valid?+
Older cards carried S/O, D/O or W/O. The field is now care of. An old card remains your Aadhaar. An update will show it the present way.
My father's name is misspelt in the C/O line. Does it matter?+
It can, where an office reads the line as your father's name and compares it with another paper. Correct it to the spelling on his own Aadhaar.

It is not issued as such proof. Where an office asks for proof of a relationship, give a birth certificate or a marriage certificate.
My husband has died, or we are divorced. Do I have to remove his name?+
No rule we found requires it. You may leave the line, change it or remove it, by an address update.
Can I put my mother's name there?+
The line takes a name of your choosing. The authority's answer speaks of father, husband and others.
Can it be done online?+
The authority's answer on adding a father's or husband's name appears under its online address update process. Check what the online facility asks for the address itself.
PAN shows my father's name differently from the C/O line. Which is right?+
They are two separate records. PAN records a parent's name. Aadhaar's line is an address detail. Bring both to the spelling on your father's own papers.
My child's Aadhaar shows a C/O name. Whose should it be?+
A parent's or the guardian's. Use the spelling on that person's own Aadhaar.
Do you update Aadhaar?+
No. You do, at a centre or online. We prepare a Gazette where a person's own change of name needs one.

Who Wrote and Reviewed This Page?

This page is written by the Documentation Desk Team of UttarakhandNameChange.com, the team that prepares Gazette files for people across Uttarakhand.

It is reviewed by Advocate Vipin Chauhan.

That relationship details are not collected in Aadhaar, that a father's or husband's name may be added in the C/O field as part of the address, that no documentary support is required for it, that it is optional and used for letter delivery, and that an earlier form offered S/O, D/O, W/O and H/O, are from the Unique Identification Authority of India's published answers and its enrolment and update forms. That the limits apply to name, gender and date of birth is from the authority's page on updates. That a change to the line does not count against the name limit is our reading of that, not a statement we found in terms. We could not confirm what proof is asked for the address when only the care-of line changes, or when the older prefixes were dropped. The identity authority is the authority.

The C/O Line: The Short Version

The name after C/O on Aadhaar is part of the address. The identity authority does not collect relationship details, asks for no document for that name, and treats it as optional. It is added, corrected or changed by an address update, without a Gazette or an affidavit. Spell it as on that person's own Aadhaar. It is not proof of who your father or husband is. A woman can put her husband's name there without changing her own.
