Remittance Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand: Money Sent From Abroad
For families who receive money from a son, a husband or a brother working abroad, and find it held because the receiver's name does not match: the two roads money takes, whose papers are read, who can correct a slip, and how to stop it happening every month.
A remittance name mismatch is corrected by the sender, at the sending end, with the reference number. The receiver cannot change it here. For every later transfer, the sender types the receiver's name exactly as on the receiver's Aadhaar or bank passbook. No Gazette is needed for a typing slip.

Many households in the hills live on money sent home from the Gulf, from ships and from hotels abroad. It arrives at a bank, a post office or a counter in the bazaar. A remittance name mismatch is when it does not arrive, since the name typed abroad differs from the card in a mother's hand. This page explains remittance name mismatch, and how a family avoids it.
We do not handle money transfers, and this subject needs no Gazette in the ordinary case. The rules for cash transfers are from the central bank's direction on the money transfer scheme and India Post's page on it. For the worker's own papers, read overseas job and emigration name mismatch.
What Are the Two Roads for the Money?
Cash at a counter
- The sender pays an agent abroad, and names a receiver
- He is given a reference number, which he passes home
- The receiver goes to a bank, a post office or an agent's counter
- She is paid on her identity paper and the number
A credit to a bank account
- The sender gives the receiver's account number and name
- The money travels through banks
- It is credited to the account
- The bank reads the name against its own record
In both, a name is typed in another country, by the sender or a clerk, from memory or from a message on a phone. It is then read here against a paper the typist never saw. That is the whole of the risk.
What Do the Rules Say?
From the central bank's master direction on the money transfer service scheme, and India Post's page on its international money transfer service. Limits are revised, so check the present ones.
| Point | What is laid down |
|---|---|
| What may be sent | Only inward personal remittances, such as money for family maintenance |
| Each remittance | Capped at USD 2,500 |
| Cash | Up to Rs 50,000 may be paid in cash to a beneficiary. Anything above is paid by account payee cheque or credited to the beneficiary's account |
| How often | One beneficiary may receive 30 remittances in a calendar year |
| At the counter | The receiver fills a form, shows valid identification and is paid once the transaction is verified |
| Why identity is checked | Receivers have to establish identity and residence through Government-issued documents, under the rules against money laundering |
The identity check is a legal duty on whoever pays the money out. A clerk who refuses over a difference in a name is not being difficult. He is not allowed to guess.
Where Is the Receiver's Name Written?
| Record | Written by | Who can correct it |
|---|---|---|
| The transfer itself | The sender, or the agent abroad | The sender, through that agent |
| The receiver's identity paper | Its issuing authority | The receiver, at its office |
| The receiver's bank account | The bank | The receiver, at the branch |
| The form at the counter | The receiver | The receiver, on the spot |
Only the first row is out of the receiver's reach, and it is the one most often wrong. A family can stand at a counter all morning and change nothing. One phone call abroad does it.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
The sender typed it loosely
- A home name, a short form, a wrong letter, a missing surname
- The receiver's papers are in order
- The sender has it corrected abroad
The receiver's papers disagree with each other
- Aadhaar in one form, the bank account in another
- The sender matched one. The counter read the other
- The receiver brings her papers to one name
The receiver's name changed
- A wife's surname after marriage, on some papers and not others
- The sender uses the name he calls her by
- He sends in the name on her identity paper, until her papers agree
The first is the commonest. A man who has called his mother "Maa" for thirty years is asked by a clerk in another country for her full name, and gives what he can remember.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The transfer has a wrong letter or a short name | The sender corrects it through his agent | No |
| The transfer has the name the family uses at home | The same. Then send from the identity paper | No |
| The bank returned a credit over the name | The sender resends with the passbook's name | No |
| Aadhaar and the bank account differ | Correct the account or Aadhaar | No |
| A wife's Aadhaar is in her maiden name | Send in that name. Update her papers on the marriage certificate | No |
| The receiver has no identity paper | Get Aadhaar and an account made. Send to another member meanwhile | No |
| The receiver's Aadhaar is itself wrong | Correct Aadhaar. Send in the Aadhaar name until then | No |
| The receiver changed a name by choice | Gazette, then Aadhaar and the bank | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows. The sender's agent settles most of the rest in a day.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Each money transfer company has its own way of amending a transfer.
Step 1: Find out which road the money took
Cash to be collected at a counter, or a credit to a bank account. The cure differs.
Step 2: Ask the sender to read out the receiver's name as typed
Letter by letter, from the receipt he was given abroad.
Step 3: Put it beside the receiver's identity paper, or the bank passbook
The one the counter or the bank will read.
Step 4: If they differ, the sender asks his agent to correct the name
At the sending end, with the reference number. The receiver cannot change it here.
Step 5: If the receiver's own papers are the odd ones, correct those
Aadhaar at its centre, the bank account at the branch. That takes longer than a call abroad.
Step 6: Collect or check the credit, with the reference number
And the original identity paper, for cash.
Step 7: Send the sender a photograph of the identity paper or passbook
So that every later transfer is typed from it.
Step 8: Keep the receipts
Both ends. They are the record of money that came into the family.
What Should the Sender Do?
- Keep a photograph of the receiver's identity paper, and of the first page of her passbook, on the phone.
- Type or dictate her name from that photograph. Never from memory.
- Give the full name, in the order the paper has it. Do not add "Mrs" or "Devi" that the paper does not carry, or leave out one that it does.
- Save the receiver once in the money transfer app, correctly, and reuse the saved entry.
- Read the receipt before leaving the counter. A slip corrected in the same hour costs nothing.
- Send the reference number home by message, with the name exactly as on the receipt.
The sender's own name goes on the transfer as his passport has it. The receiver should know that form of it too, since a counter may ask who sent the money. Read overseas job and emigration name mismatch.
What Happens With Cash at a Counter?
- The receiver goes to a post office, a bank or an agent that pays for the sender's company.
- She gives the reference number, fills a form and shows an original identity paper.
- The clerk's screen shows the receiver's name as typed abroad. He compares it with the paper.
- The rules allow up to Rs 50,000 in cash. Anything more goes by cheque or to her account, so she needs an account in the same name.
- Ask the sender's agent what happens to a transfer that is not collected in time.
- The receiver pays nothing. The sender paid the fee abroad.
Use a post office, a bank or a known agent's shop. A caller who offers to "release" a transfer for a fee is a fraud, however much he knows about the family.
What Happens With a Credit to a Bank Account?
- The sender gives the bank or the app the receiver's account number, the bank's code and her name.
- The receiving bank compares the name sent with the account's name.
- A close match is credited. A name that does not match may be held for the bank's inquiry, or sent back.
- A returned transfer can cost the sender time and money.
- The account has to be live. One left unused for long is made dormant, and a credit to it is held.
- Give the sender the name from the passbook's first page, not from Aadhaar, if the two are not yet the same.
Then make them the same. Read name change in bank records, UPI name mismatch and Jan Dhan account name mismatch.
What About Wives and Parents?
- The receiver is usually a wife or an elderly parent.
- A wife's Aadhaar may still be in her maiden name, and her new bank account in her married one.
- Her husband sends in her married name. The counter reads her Aadhaar. The account reads something else again.
- Until her papers agree, he should send in whichever name the paying point will read: the identity paper for cash, the passbook for a credit.
- An old mother may have a single name on her card, or a spelling made at a camp. He sends in that, exactly.
- A parent with no identity paper cannot be paid. Aadhaar and an account for her are worth one visit home.
Read name change after marriage, Kumari, Devi and the husband’s surname and lost or no documents to prove your name.
What About the Worker's Own Accounts?
- A person who works abroad may also send money to an account of his own in India.
- Banks keep special kinds of account for people living abroad. They are opened on the passport and the visa.
- So the name on such an account is the passport's, in the passport's order.
- His older savings account here may be in a shorter or different form, from before he had a passport.
- A bank that finds two forms for one customer will ask him to settle them.
- He should tell his bank that he now lives abroad. The rules for his accounts change when he does.
We did not read the rules for those accounts. The bank will explain them. Read name change for NRIs from Uttarakhand and name change in passport.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Only where the receiver has changed a name by choice, and Aadhaar and the bank ask for a Gazette. It has no part in a slip typed abroad or a wife's married surname.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a typing slip abroad or a married surname
Those are settled by the sender, the bank or a marriage certificate.
Step 2: Remember whose papers are read
The receiver's here. The sender's own name is his passport's.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar and the bank account.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update Aadhaar and the bank
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then tell the sender the new name.
Which Gazette Should You Use?
Money is paid out by a bank, a post office or an agent, on Aadhaar or another central paper. The Gazette of India is the one to use.
Step 1: Remember who pays the money out
A bank, a post office or an agent, on an identity paper.
Step 2: Remember that they follow Aadhaar
Which follows the Gazette of India.
Step 3: Prefer the Gazette of India
A state notice does little here.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits another purpose
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search egazette.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Families Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| The sender typing the name from memory | From a photograph of the identity paper |
| Arguing at the counter here | Call the sender. Only he can correct it |
| Sending in a married name to a maiden-name Aadhaar | Send in the name the paying point reads |
| Aadhaar and the passbook in two forms | Bring them to one |
| Sending to a dormant account | Use the account every few months |
| Letting a neighbour collect on his own identity paper | Send to the person who will collect |
| Paying a caller to release the money | Never. It is a fraud |
| Throwing away the receipts | Keep both ends |
| Asking for a Gazette for a typing slip | The sender's agent corrects it |
A typical case we handle: a woman in Pauri went to collect money her son had sent from the Gulf. He had named the receiver "Savitri Negi". Her Aadhaar read "Sabitri Devi". The post office could not pay her. A relative asked us if a Gazette would settle it. It would not, and she had changed no name. Her son went back to his agent that evening and had the receiver's name corrected to "Sabitri Devi". She collected the next day. He now keeps a photograph of her Aadhaar on his phone. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a slip typed abroad, a married surname, and a bank account in another form. The sender, the bank and the Aadhaar centre settle those. We are useful only where the receiver has changed a name by choice and a Gazette notification is asked for.

All 13 districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh. A transfer is corrected by the sender abroad. If the receiver's own papers disagree, send photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one to correct.
