UPI Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand
For people and shopkeepers whose payment app shows an old, misspelt or unexpected name to those who pay them: where that name comes from, why it cannot be changed in the app, how the bank account behind it is corrected, and what a wrong transfer is and is not.
A UPI name mismatch is corrected at the bank, not in the app. Payment apps show the name the bank holds for the account. Correct Aadhaar or PAN first if one of them is wrong, then ask the bank to correct the account's name. The apps then show the corrected name. A spelling needs no Gazette.

Almost everyone in the state now takes money on a phone, from the vegetable seller to the retired teacher drawing a pension. Each payment begins with a name flashing on the payer's screen. A UPI name mismatch is that name being one the receiver no longer uses, or never chose. This page explains UPI name mismatch for people and small traders in Uttarakhand.
We do not deal with banks or payment apps, and this subject seldom needs a Gazette. Where the displayed name comes from is as news reports set out a circular of the payments body in 2025. We did not read the circular itself. How a bank corrects a name is general practice. For the account, read name change in bank records.
What Does the Payer See?
- The system. A way of moving money between bank accounts through a phone, run by the national payments body.
- The address. The payer types a mobile number or a payment address, or scans a code.
- The check. The app asks the receiver's bank whose account that is.
- The screen. The bank's answer, a name, is shown to the payer before the secret number is entered.
- The point of it. The payer reads the name, sees that it is the right person, and pays.
So the name on that screen is the receiver's whole identity to the payer. A shopkeeper who says "pay Negi General Store" while the phone says "Bachi Singh" has to explain it to every new customer.
What Did the Payments Body Lay Down?
From news reports of a circular of the national payments body in 2025. We did not read the circular on its own site.
| Point | What the reports say |
|---|---|
| Which name | Apps show only the ultimate beneficiary's name, as fetched from the bank's own system, on the screen before a payment |
| What is not shown | A name taken from a code, a name the user typed for the payee, or a name built by the app in any other way |
| No editing | Apps disable any feature that lets a user modify the beneficiary name for a payment |
| From when | Apps and banks were to follow this by 30 June 2025 |
| Why | So that a payer can be confident the money is going to the right person |
Before this, an app might show a nickname, a shop's board name or whatever a code carried. Now there is one source. That is safer for payers. For receivers it means the bank's record, slips and all, is on display to the world.
Which Five Names Sit Around One Payment?
| Name | Kept by | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| The account holder's name | The bank | Shown to every payer. The one that matters |
| The profile name in the app | The app | Seen by the user, and in chat and history. Not shown as the beneficiary |
| The payment address | The app and the bank | An address only. It may contain a name, and need not |
| The name on the shop's board and code sticker | The shopkeeper | What the customer expects to see |
| The mobile number's owner | The telecom company | Ties the phone to the account |
Most complaints of a "wrong name in the app" are about the first. Most attempts to fix it are made on the second. They are different records, kept by different bodies.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
The bank holds an old or misspelt name
- A maiden surname, initials, a spelling
- Payers see it and ask who that is
- Cured at the bank, on identity papers
The bank's name is right, and unexpected
- A shop's account in the owner's name
- A wife taking payments on her husband's account
- Not a slip. Cured by using an account in the right name
A name that changed
- The account holder changed a name by choice
- Aadhaar and PAN carry the new name, the account the old
- Cured at the bank, on a Gazette
The second kind is the commonest among small traders. Nothing in it is an error, and no correction form will help. The fix is a different account.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| Payers see a misspelt name | The bank corrects the account, on Aadhaar and PAN | No |
| Payers see initials or a short form | The same | No |
| Payers see a maiden name | The bank, on the marriage certificate and present identity papers | No |
| The app's profile name is wrong | Edit it in the app. It is not what payers see | No |
| The payment address spells an old name | Add a new address in the app | No |
| A shop's code shows the owner's name | A current account in the shop's name, if the owner wants the shop shown | No |
| Money went to a stranger with a similar name | Report it to the app and the bank at once. Not a name correction | No |
| The account holder changed a name by choice | Gazette, then Aadhaar and PAN, then the bank | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows. For the rest the branch, or the app's own settings, is the place.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Each bank and app has its own screens.
Step 1: Ask someone to start a small payment to you, and read the name shown
Do not complete it. The name on that screen is what your bank holds.
Step 2: Put your passbook, Aadhaar and PAN beside it
The name shown should be the name on the passbook, and that should match the other two.
Step 3: Correct Aadhaar or PAN first, if one of them is wrong
At its own office. The bank follows them.
Step 4: Give the bank a written request to correct the account's name
With identity papers, and the marriage certificate or Gazette where the name has changed.
Step 5: Wait for the bank's record to change, then check again
The same small test as before. The apps show whatever the bank now returns.
Step 6: Update the name in the app's own profile
That is a separate entry, kept by the app. It does not change what payers see.
Step 7: Make a new payment address if the old one spells your earlier name
Most apps let a user add another. Tell regular payers the new one.
Step 8: For a shop, reprint the code and the board together
After the account is right, so that the name on the wall is the name on the customer's screen.
What About the App's Profile, and the Payment Address?
- Each app keeps a profile: a name, a photograph, sometimes an email. The user types it and can change it.
- That profile name is shown to you, and in some apps to people you chat with. Reports of the 2025 rule say it is not to be shown as the beneficiary.
- So editing the profile is harmless and useful, and does not solve a payer's question.
- The payment address is a handle, with the bank's or the app's tag after it. Many were made from the name or the number on the first day.
- An address that spells an old surname is not a record of your name. It is an address. Add a new one if it embarrasses you.
- A wallet, where an app offers one, has its own KYC done by the app. A wrong name there is corrected through the app, with identity papers.
Read CKYC name mismatch, since an app or a bank that checks your KYC reads the central record as well.
What About a Shopkeeper's Code?
- A shop's printed code is tied to one bank account. The customer's phone shows that account's name.
- A proprietor who took the code on a savings account is shown as a person: "Bachi Singh Negi", not "Negi General Store".
- That is honest and lawful. It also makes a careful customer stop and ask.
- A shop that wants its trade name shown needs a current account in the trade name, opened on the shop's registrations.
- Where a son runs the shop on a father's account, the father's name is shown. After the father's death the account is frozen, and the code with it, until the heirs produce proof of succession.
- A homestay, a taxi and a vegetable cart are all in the same position. The guest or the passenger sees the bank's name.
Read name change in trade licence and shop establishment, name change in Udyam and GST registration and Mudra and PM SVANidhi loan name mismatch.
What About the Mobile Number?
- A payment app is set up on the mobile number registered with the bank account. The phone has to hold that number's SIM.
- In many homes the SIM was bought by a son or a husband, in his name, and given to a mother or a wife.
- The bank does not usually check who owns the SIM. But a lost SIM is replaced only to its registered owner.
- So a woman whose account and app run on a number in her husband's name can be locked out of her own money by a lost phone.
- Put the number in the account holder's own name, at the telecom company's store.
- Change the number at the bank whenever it changes. An old number passed on to a stranger is a real danger.
What About Money Sent to the Wrong Person?
- A payer who types one wrong digit reaches a stranger. The screen shows the stranger's name, and a hurried payer does not read it.
- Two people with the same common name, a Rawat or a Negi in the same town, are easy to confuse.
- This is not a name mismatch in anybody's record. Both records are right. The payer chose the wrong one.
- Report it at once in the app, and to your own bank, with the transaction's reference. Speed matters.
- The money can be returned only with the receiver's consent, through the banks. Nobody can simply pull it back.
- The lesson for receivers is the reverse. A clear, correct name on your account is what lets a payer catch the mistake in time.
We did not confirm the present complaint steps or time limits. The app's help page and the bank set them out. Read cheque payee name mismatch, for the older form of the same slip.
What About Refunds, Salary and Benefits?
- A payment between two people goes by the address or the number. A wrong name on the account seldom stops it.
- Payments made by offices are different. They check the name against their own record before sending.
- A tax refund, a scholarship, a subsidy or a salary can be held where the account's name does not match the payer's record of the person.
- The same account, the same wrong name: harmless for a friend's transfer, fatal for a refund.
- So a name seen on a payer's screen is worth acting on. It is a free look at what the bank holds.

Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Only where the account holder has changed a name by choice, and the bank asks for a Gazette before it changes the account. It has no part in a spelling, a married surname, a profile name or a shop's name.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or a married surname
A bank corrects those on identity papers and a marriage certificate.
Step 2: Ask the bank what it needs to change the account's name
Many ask for a Gazette for a change of name by choice.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar, PAN and the bank account.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar and PAN, and then the bank. The apps follow the bank.
See gazette name change in Uttarakhand. The Gazette fee itself can be paid by phone. Read BharatKosh fee payment for Gazette name change.
Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
A bank follows Aadhaar and PAN, which are central records. The Gazette of India is the one to prefer.
Step 1: Ask the bank which Gazette it accepts
It follows Aadhaar and PAN.
Step 2: Think about your other accounts and cards
The Gazette of India serves them all.
Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit
Keep photocopies of everything.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do People Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Trying to change the displayed name inside the app | Go to the bank |
| Editing the profile and thinking it is done | Test with a small payment |
| Installing another app to get a different name | Every app shows the same bank name |
| Running a shop's code on a relative's account | Use an account in the right name |
| Keeping the SIM in someone else's name | Put it in the account holder's name |
| Paying without reading the name shown | Read it every time |
| Treating a wrong transfer as a name problem | Report it at once |
| Paying for a Gazette to fix a spelling at the bank | The bank corrects it on identity papers |
| Sharing a code or a secret number with a caller who offers to "fix the name" | Never. Nobody needs it to correct a name |
A typical case we handle: a woman in Rishikesh ran a small tailoring shop and took payments on a code. Customers saw "Kumari Seema" on their phones, and some refused to pay a name they did not know. Her Aadhaar and PAN read "Seema Chauhan". She asked us for a Gazette. She did not need one. She had taken her husband's surname on marriage, and the account had been opened years before it. She gave the bank her marriage certificate and identity papers. The account was corrected, and the same code then showed her present name. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.
When you do not need us
For a spelling, a married surname, a profile, a payment address, a shop's name and a wrong transfer. The bank and the app settle those. We are useful only where the account holder has changed a name by choice and a Gazette notification is asked for.

Names in UPI: The Short Version
The name a payer sees is the name the bank holds for the account. It cannot be edited in the app. Test it with a small payment that you do not complete. If it is old or misspelt, correct Aadhaar or PAN first where needed, then ask the bank to correct the account. The profile and the payment address are side entries you can change yourself. A shop that wants its own name shown needs an account in that name.
A spelling needs no Gazette. To find out which record to correct, send photos on WhatsApp 9540005064, and we will reply in working hours.
