Marriage Grant Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand: Shadi Anudan Schemes
For families applying for the state's grant towards a daughter's marriage, where the parent's, the bride's or the groom's name differs between the papers: which papers are read, where each is corrected, why the bride's surname should wait, and how the application window limits what can be done.
A marriage grant name mismatch is cured before applying: the applicant's certificates reissued at the tehsil in the Aadhaar name, the family register entries corrected at the village office, and the marriage certificate read against the bride's and groom's own papers. Apply inside the year of the marriage. A spelling needs no Gazette.

The state gives a grant towards a daughter's marriage to families who qualify, and the sum matters a great deal to the households it is meant for. The application brings together the papers of three people and two families, in the busiest months of a household's life. A marriage grant name mismatch is those papers not agreeing. This page explains marriage grant name mismatch for families in Uttarakhand.
We do not fill these applications, and this subject seldom needs a Gazette. Who can apply, the papers and the time limit are from the state's own tribal welfare and social welfare sites and from scheme directories. We left out the amount and the income limit, which the state revises. For the marriage certificate itself, read name correction in a marriage registration certificate.
What Are the Schemes, in Brief?
- Who runs them. The state's social welfare department, with the tribal welfare department for tribal families.
- One scheme. A grant for the marriage of daughters of scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and poor families.
- Another. A grant for the marriage of daughters of destitute widows who draw the department's widow pension.
- How to apply. Online, on the department's pension and schemes portal.
- When. In the same financial year as the marriage.
- How it is paid. Into the beneficiary's bank account.
The grant is a one-time sum for a daughter's first marriage, for a limited number of daughters in a family. The district social welfare office has the present amount and limits.
What Is Published?
From the state tribal welfare department's page on the marriage grant, the social welfare department's service page, and scheme directories.
| Point | What is published |
|---|---|
| Who | A permanent resident of the state, of a scheduled tribe or scheduled caste or a BPL family, within an income limit |
| Ages | The bride at least 18 and the groom at least 21 at the marriage |
| Time | The application is made in the same financial year as the marriage, from 1 March to the end of February |
| Papers | Income and caste certificates issued by the tehsildar, copies of the family register for both the bride and the groom, a marriage invitation card or the village head's certificate, an affidavit, Aadhaar, a BPL card and bank details |
| A directory adds | A residence certificate, the ration card, proof of the bride's and groom's dates of birth, the marriage registration certificate, and a bank account linked to Aadhaar |
| The widow's scheme | The department itself confirms that the widow is drawing its pension |
Count the people named in that list: the applicant, the bride, the groom, and the heads of two families. Each appears on several papers issued by different offices in two villages.
Whose Name Is on Which Paper?
| Paper | Whose name | Where it is corrected |
|---|---|---|
| Income, caste and residence certificates | The applicant | The tehsil |
| Aadhaar, ration card, bank account | The applicant | Each at its own office |
| The bride's family register entry | The bride, and her parents | Her village office |
| The groom's family register entry | The groom, and his parents | His village office |
| Proof of date of birth | The bride, and the groom | The board, the Registrar or an Aadhaar centre |
| The marriage certificate | The bride and the groom, with their parents | The office that registered the marriage |
The bride's name is the thread. It is on her family's register, her school certificate, her Aadhaar and the marriage certificate, and her father or mother is the applicant. If she is "Guddi" on one and "Pooja Kumari" on another, the file does not hold together.
What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?
The applicant's certificates differ
- An income or caste certificate in a short or home name
- Made years ago, for another purpose
- Reissued by the tehsil, in the Aadhaar name
The bride is named in two ways
- A home name in the family register, a school name elsewhere
- Or a married surname taken before the file was complete
- The register is corrected. The surname waits
The marriage paper differs
- The certificate or the card spells a name as the family says it
- The bride's and groom's own papers read otherwise
- The registering office corrects its certificate
The second is the one families bring on themselves, with the best intentions. A bride's Aadhaar is changed to her husband's surname in the week after the wedding, and the grant file, built on her maiden name, stops matching her.
Which Case Is Yours?
| The situation | Route | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| The income certificate has a short name | A fresh certificate from the tehsil | No |
| The caste certificate differs from Aadhaar | A corrected certificate from the tehsil | No |
| The family register has the bride by a home name | Correct the register at the village office | No |
| The marriage certificate has a slip | The registering office | No |
| The bride's Aadhaar was changed to a married surname mid-way | Carry the marriage certificate. Ask the office how it reads the file | No |
| The bank account's name differs | The branch, on Aadhaar | No |
| A widow's pension record differs from her Aadhaar | The social welfare office | No |
| The applicant or the bride changed a name by choice | Gazette, then Aadhaar and the certificates | Yes |
A Gazette appears once in eight rows, and seldom inside the scheme's window. The tehsil and the village office settle the rest.
How Do You Put It Right?
This is the general method. Begin when the marriage is fixed, not after it.
Step 1: Write down who the applicant is
The parent who applies, as the scheme asks. Every certificate in the file is in that person's name.
Step 2: Lay out the applicant's papers
Aadhaar, the caste certificate where needed, residence, income or BPL, the ration card and the bank passbook.
Step 3: Lay out the bride's and the groom's papers
A proof of date of birth for each, and the family register entry of each family.
Step 4: Read every name against the others
The applicant's on six papers. The bride's on four or five. The parents' names wherever they appear.
Step 5: Correct the applicant's certificates at the tehsil
Fresh ones, in the Aadhaar name, through the state's service portal.
Step 6: Have the family register entries corrected
At the village office of each family, on Aadhaar and a school certificate.
Step 7: Register the marriage, and read the certificate
The bride's and groom's names on it should be the names on their own papers.
Step 8: Apply inside the scheme's window, and read the printout
With a bank account in the applicant's name, linked to Aadhaar.
What About the Applicant's Certificates?
- The parent who applies shows who he or she is, where the family lives and that it qualifies.
- That is three or four certificates from the tehsil, all in the applicant's name.
- A family usually has old ones. An income certificate has a short life and is taken afresh in any case.
- Apply for all of them together, in the name on Aadhaar, through the state's service portal.
- The ration card and the bank account should carry the same name. The grant is paid into that account.
- Where the father has died or is away, the mother applies, on her own papers. Her name then has to match across them.
Read name change in income certificate, name change in caste certificate, name change in residence certificate and name change in ration card.
What About the Bride's Name?
- The grant is for a daughter's marriage, so her papers are read most closely of all.
- Her proof of date of birth is usually a high school certificate, a birth certificate, the family register or Aadhaar.
- Those should agree on her name and her date of birth. Her age at the marriage decides eligibility.
- Her name on the marriage certificate should be the name on those papers.
- The file describes her as her parents' daughter, at the time of the marriage, in her maiden name.
- So it is safer to leave her Aadhaar as it is until the grant is settled. A married surname can be taken afterwards, on the marriage certificate.
We could not confirm how the department reads a bride whose Aadhaar already carries a married surname. Ask the district social welfare office. Read name change after marriage and is a name change compulsory after marriage.
What About the Family Registers?
- The state's list asks for copies of the family register for both the bride and the groom.
- The register is kept at the village office. It lists each household, with every member's name and relation to the head.
- It was written from what the family said, and children are often in it by their home names.
- A member's name is corrected at the village office, on a school certificate and Aadhaar.
- The groom's family's register is in another village, and sometimes another district. Ask for his copy early.
- Where the groom's family is from a state that keeps no such register, ask the social welfare office what it accepts in its place.
After the marriage the bride is removed from one register and entered in the other. That is a separate step, taken after the grant file is complete. Read name correction in the family register.
What About the Marriage Certificate?
- The state's page lists a marriage invitation card or a certificate from the village head. A directory lists the marriage registration certificate as mandatory.
- Marriages in the state are to be registered in any case. Register it soon after the wedding.
- The certificate names the bride and the groom, with their parents and addresses.
- Fill the registration form from their own papers, not from the wedding card. A card is printed as the family speaks.
- Read the certificate when it is issued. A slip is corrected by the office that registered the marriage.
- The date of the marriage on it fixes the financial year in which the grant has to be applied for.
Read name correction in a marriage registration certificate and documents required for a name change after marriage.
What About a Widow's Daughter?
- The grant for daughters of destitute widows is for a widow who draws the department's widow pension.
- The department confirms the pension from its own record. A directory says no caste certificate is needed under this scheme.
- So the widow's name in the pension record is what the application is first read against.
- That record was made when the pension began, on the papers she had then. It may differ from her Aadhaar today.
- Have the pension record and Aadhaar brought to one name before applying. It also protects the pension itself.
- Her late husband's name appears on the daughter's papers. It should be the same wherever it does.
Read name change in old age and widow pension records and Kumari, Devi and the husband’s surname.
Where Does a Gazette Come In?
Only where the applicant or the bride has changed a name by choice, and Aadhaar and the tehsil ask for a Gazette. It has no part in a spelling, a home name or a married surname, and it seldom fits inside the scheme's window.
Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or a home name
Those are settled at the tehsil and the village office.
Step 2: Weigh the time against the scheme's window
A Gazette commonly takes 3 to 7 weeks. The application has a closing date.
Step 3: Fix the exact new name
The spelling that will go on Aadhaar and the certificates.
Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice
Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.
Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking
Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.
Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate
The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.
Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh
Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.
Step 8: Send the file yourself, then update in order
Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then Aadhaar, the certificates and the bank.
Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?
The scheme and its certificates are the state's, and its offices may accept a state Gazette. Aadhaar and the bank are the reasons to prefer the Gazette of India.
Step 1: Remember that the scheme and its certificates are the state's
The social welfare office and the tehsil may accept a state Gazette.
Step 2: Remember that Aadhaar and the bank are central
They follow the Gazette of India.
Step 3: Prefer the Gazette of India
It serves both sides.
Step 4: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you
Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.
Step 5: Download the notice
Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.
To weigh the two, read Uttarakhand Gazette vs Gazette of India.
Which Mistakes Do Families Make?
| Mistake | What to do |
|---|---|
| Starting the papers after the wedding | Start when the marriage is fixed |
| Uploading an old income certificate unread | A fresh one, in the Aadhaar name |
| Leaving the daughter's home name in the family register | Correct it at the village office |
| Changing the bride's Aadhaar surname mid-way | Wait until the grant is settled |
| Registering the marriage from the wedding card | From the couple's own papers |
| Asking late for the groom's family register | Ask early. It is in another village |
| A bank account not linked to Aadhaar | Link it before applying |
| Letting the financial year run out | Apply inside the year of the marriage |
| Paying an agent a share of the grant | Apply yourself, or at a service centre for its fee |
A typical case we handle: a father near Haldwani applied for the grant after his daughter's marriage. His income certificate named him "Ramu". His Aadhaar read "Ramesh Chandra". The family register had his daughter as "Guddi". Her high school certificate and the marriage certificate read "Pooja Kumari". The application was returned. A neighbour suggested a Gazette for the girl. Nobody had changed a name. He had the income certificate reissued, and the village office corrected the register on her school certificate. He applied again within the year. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

Who can apply, the ages, the application in the same financial year as the marriage and the list of papers are from the state tribal welfare department's page on the marriage grant. That the application is online is from the social welfare department's service page. The residence certificate, ration card, proofs of date of birth, marriage registration certificate, Aadhaar-linked bank account, and the widow's scheme are from the national scheme directory and another directory. We left out the amount and the income limit. We could not confirm how the department reads a bride whose Aadhaar already carries a married surname, or what it takes in place of a family register. How the tehsil and a village office correct a name is general guidance. The district social welfare office is the authority.
