Unclaimed Bank Deposit Name Mismatch in Uttarakhand

For people looking for an old account of their own or a late parent's, where the name on the account differs from the name they carry today: how the central bank's search portal reads a name, why a search comes up empty, and what the bank needs before it pays.

Quick answer

An unclaimed bank deposit name mismatch is handled in two stages. Search the central bank's portal in every form the old account may carry. Then claim at the bank, with identity papers and the paper that links the old name to yours, such as a marriage certificate. A spelling needs no Gazette.

Two brothers in Uttarakhand searching the UDGAM portal on a laptop beside their late father old bank passbook and death certificate
A UDGAM search runs on the name as the bank wrote it, so search every old form of the name and then claim at the bank with the linking paper.

Families in the hills have always sent earners away, to the army, to Delhi, to the plains. Small accounts were opened wherever a man was posted, and forgotten when he moved. An unclaimed bank deposit name mismatch is what stands between such an account and the family that owns it. This page explains unclaimed bank deposit name mismatch for families in Uttarakhand.

We do not search or claim for anyone, and this subject seldom needs a Gazette. How the portal searches and what it can and cannot do are from the central bank's own answers to common questions about it. When a deposit counts as unclaimed, and that there is no fee or time limit, are from guides. For a claim on an account with a nominee, read nominee name mismatch in a bank claim.

What Are Unclaimed Deposits, and Where Do They Go?

As guides to the central bank's rules describe it.

  • What counts. A savings or current account not operated for ten years, or a fixed deposit not claimed for ten years after it matured.
  • Where the money goes. The bank transfers the balance to a depositor education and awareness fund kept by the central bank, set up in 2014.
  • Whose it remains. The depositor's, or the heirs'. The transfer does not end the right to claim.
  • Who pays a claim. The bank where the account was held. It pays the claimant and recovers the sum from the fund.
  • How it is found. Through the central bank's search portal, launched in August 2023, or by asking the bank.

The money is safe. What is at risk is the knowledge of where it is, and the papers that prove whose it was.

What Do the Central Bank's Answers Say?

From the central bank's own answers to common questions on the portal.

What the central bank's answers say about its portal for unclaimed deposits
PointWhat the answers say
Which depositsAll unclaimed deposits and accounts that are part of the fund can be searched
Which banks30 banks as on 4 March 2024, covering around 90 per cent of such deposits by value
What a search needsThe account holder's name, the bank or banks, and one or more of five inputs: PAN, driving licence number, voter card number, passport number and date of birth
Without thoseThe account holder's address can be used in their place
What it cannot doSettle a claim. The portal only searches, and gives information on each bank's claim process. A deposit is claimed only from the bank
The reference numberA unique number given by the bank to each unclaimed deposit, so that a third party cannot identify the account holder or the branch, and so that the branch can settle the claim

The third row is where the name comes in. The portal does not know who you are. It matches letters typed today against letters a clerk typed long ago.

Where Does the Name Matter?

The two stages at which a name is read for an unclaimed deposit
StageWhat is comparedWhat goes wrong
The searchThe name typed, with one identifier, against the bank's record of the accountThe account is there and is not found, since the name was typed in today's form
The claimThe claimant's identity papers against the account holder's name in the bank's booksThe bank cannot see that the claimant is the account holder, or the heir of one
The paymentThe claimant's present bank account against the claimThe money is sent to an account in a third form of the name

An account opened in 1989 knows nothing of Aadhaar or PAN. It was opened on an introduction and a signature. The only identifier the bank may hold is a date of birth or an address, and sometimes neither.

What Kinds of Mismatch Are There?

The same person, written differently

  • Initials, a rank or a title, an old spelling, a surname added later
  • The claimant is the account holder
  • Shown by an old passbook and present identity papers

A name that changed

  • A woman's account in her maiden name
  • Or an account in a name the holder later changed by choice
  • Shown by the marriage certificate, or a Gazette

A different person altogether

  • The account holder has died, and a son, a daughter or a widow is claiming
  • Not a mismatch. A claim by a nominee or by heirs
  • Shown by the death certificate and proof of heirship

Most searches by families are of the third kind, with the first folded into it: a late father's account, in a form of his name that no living paper uses.

How Do You Search and Claim?

This is the general method. The portal's screens change, and each bank has its own claim form.

Step 1: Write down how the account holder's name may have been written

The full name, initials, a home name, a maiden surname, and the spellings an old clerk might have used.

Step 2: Gather one identifier the bank would have held

PAN, a voter card number, a driving licence number, a passport number or the date of birth.

Step 3: Register on the central bank's portal and search

With the name as the bank would have it, the bank or banks, and the identifier.

Step 4: Search again in each other form of the name

A search is only as good as the spelling typed. Try the address where no identifier is known.

Step 5: Note the reference number and the bank from the result

The result gives a reference number for the deposit and points to the bank's own claim page.

Step 6: Collect the papers that tie today's name to the old one

An old passbook or deposit receipt, and whatever explains the difference: a marriage certificate, a school certificate, a Gazette.

Step 7: Claim at the bank

On its claim form, with the reference number, identity papers and the linking paper. A legal heir adds the death certificate and proof of heirship.

Step 8: Have the money paid into an account in your present name

The bank revives or closes the old account and pays the claimant.

What Does the Bank Ask For?

  • The portal's result points to the bank's own page of claim instructions. Read that page for the bank's form and list.
  • A claim by the account holder needs present identity and address papers, and whatever of the old account survives: a passbook, a deposit receipt, a cheque book.
  • Where the name on those differs from the identity papers, the bank wants the difference explained on paper.
  • A marriage certificate explains a surname. A school certificate or an old identity card explains a spelling. A Gazette explains a change by choice.
  • A bank often asks for a declaration and an indemnity as well, which protect it if another claimant appears.
  • The old account is brought up to date with present KYC before it is paid or closed.

We could not confirm any one bank's list. Ask the branch, and ask for its requirements in writing. Read CKYC name mismatch and name change in bank records.

What About a Late Parent's Account?

  1. Search in the parent's name, in each form it may have taken, with the parent's own date of birth or identity number.
  2. Find out if there was a nominee. The bank will say. A nominee claims with the death certificate and identity papers.
  3. Without a nominee, the legal heirs claim together, or one claims with the others' consent.
  4. Proof of heirship. An heirs' certificate usually serves. For a larger sum a bank may ask for a succession certificate.
  5. The names. The parent's name on the death certificate against the account. Each heir's name against that heir's papers, and against the family record.
  6. A married daughter is an heir like her brothers. Her marriage certificate links her present name to her father's family.

Read name correction in a death certificate and legal heir certificate, succession certificate name mismatch and name correction in the family register.

What About Accounts From Decades Ago?

  • Before identity cards were asked for, an account was opened on a form, a photograph and an introducer's signature.
  • The clerk wrote the name as it was spoken. Titles and ranks were often written as part of it.
  • A soldier's account at a cantonment may carry his rank and army number, and no surname.
  • A woman's account may be in her father's surname, or with "Kumari" or "Devi", or as a wife of her husband with no name of her own.
  • An old passbook, a pension paper that quotes the account, or a letter from the bank is worth more than any affidavit.
  • Search the house before you search the portal. The paper that names the branch is usually in a tin trunk.

Read Kumari, Devi and the husband’s surname, adding a surname to a single name and name change in pension and family pension records.

What Does the Portal Not Cover?

  • Post office savings. Accounts and certificates at a post office are a separate system, claimed at the post office.
  • Shares and dividends. Unclaimed shares and dividends go to a separate investor fund, with its own claim.
  • Insurance. Unclaimed policy money is listed by each insurer on its own site.
  • Provident fund. An old provident fund account is traced through the fund office.
  • Lockers. A forgotten locker is with the branch that holds it.

The same rule runs through all of them: search in the old form of the name, and claim with a paper that links it to the present one. Read name change in post office savings, NSC and KVP, share certificate name change and correction, name change in LIC policy, name change in EPFO and UAN records and bank locker name mismatch.

Where Does a Gazette Come In?

Only where the living claimant changed a name by choice, so that the old account and the present identity papers carry two different names. It has no part in initials, a spelling, a maiden name or a dead account holder's name.

Step 1: Confirm that it is a change of name, and not a spelling or a married surname

A bank settles those on identity papers and a marriage certificate.

Step 2: Ask the bank what it needs to pay a claimant whose name was changed

Many ask for a Gazette for a change of name by choice.

Step 3: Check whether a Gazette already exists

A person who changed a name years ago may hold one. A second is not needed.

Step 4: Make the affidavit and publish the newspaper notice

Sign before a notary. Publish in a daily local leading newspaper, and keep the original newspaper.

Step 5: Type the form and sign the undertaking

Two typed copies of the specimen, signed in your old name with two witnesses, and the undertaking.

Step 6: Prepare the CD, photographs and certificate

The same text on a CD in MS Word, two self-attested photographs with identity proof, and a certificate that both copies match.

Step 7: Pay the charge on BharatKosh

Commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult. It is not refunded.

Step 8: Send the file yourself, then claim

Send it to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Then give the bank the Gazette with the claim.

Would the Uttarakhand Gazette Do?

A bank follows Aadhaar and PAN, which are central records. The Gazette of India is the one to prefer.

Step 1: Ask the bank which Gazette it accepts

A bank follows Aadhaar and PAN.

Step 2: Think about your other accounts

The Gazette of India serves them all.

Step 3: Contact the Roorkee press only if a state notice suits you

Take the contact from govtpress.uk.gov.in and ask if a private change of name notice is being accepted.

Step 4: Ask for the papers, the format and the fee, and submit

Keep photocopies of everything.

Step 5: Download the notice

Search gazettes.uk.gov.in and save the PDF.

Which Mistakes Do Families Make?

Common mistakes with names when searching for and claiming an unclaimed deposit
MistakeWhat to do
Searching once, in today's nameSearch in every old form
Using your own date of birth for a parent's accountUse the account holder's
Expecting the portal to payClaim at the bank
Throwing away an old passbookKeep it. It is the best proof
One heir claiming without the othersTake their consent in writing
Having the money paid into a relative's accountInto the claimant's own, in the same name
Asking for a Gazette in a dead parent's nameThere is no such thing. Use linking papers
Paying for a Gazette to explain a spellingThe bank settles it on papers and an indemnity
Paying an agent a share to "recover" the depositThere is no fee. Claim it yourself

A typical case we handle: two brothers in Pauri searched the portal for their late father, a retired soldier, as "Dhan Singh Rawat" and found nothing. A neighbour told them a Gazette was needed. It was not, and none can be had for a man who has died. In an old trunk they found a passbook from a branch at Lansdowne in the name "Hav. D. S. Rawat". A search in that form, with his date of birth, showed a deposit. They claimed at the bank with his death certificate, the passbook, an heirs' certificate and their sister's consent. This is an illustrative example of the type of case we handle, not a named client review.

What is a lawyer's job, not ours

A dispute among heirs over the money, a bank's refusal to pay, and a succession certificate.

Which deposits and banks the portal covers, what a search needs, that an address can be used, that the portal cannot settle a claim and what the reference number is for are from the central bank's own answers to common questions on the portal, which give the count of banks as on 4 March 2024. When a deposit counts as unclaimed, the fund set up in 2014, the portal's launch in August 2023 and that there is no fee or time limit are from guides. We did not test the portal, and could not confirm any bank's list of claim papers. How a bank reads an old name, and what it asks of heirs, are general practice.
